Adjusting rear left or right side window (M4 Convertible)

Special tools required:

51 3 220
51 3 240
51 0 341
51 2 220

Configuring the correct setting will fulfil the following properties:

Tightness against water ingress
No wind noise
No rattling
No unintentional reversing of side window during closing action (anti-trap safety function)

Prerequisites for correct adjustment:

Vehicle is supported on wheels at ground level
Door window glass CORRECTLY ADJUSTED
Recharge BATTERY (read and comply with notes on lithium ion battery)
(Full operability of the power windows during the adjustment procedure is only assured with an external power supply)

Observe the checking and adjustment sequence!

Side window retraction depth/longitudinal direction
Side window preload

Adjusting procedures are performed with hardtop open.

Necessary preliminary work:

REMOVING REAR WINDOW RECESS FINISHER STRIP .
Open retractable hardtop
Move side window upwards (close)

Transverse direction setting:

Side window (1) must be situated at distance (A and B) to body (2).

Dimension A = 6 mm

Dimension B = 8, 5 mm

Measuring points in area of B-pillar (A) and at rear end of side window (B).

Adjusting transverse direction:

Remove SIDE TRIM PANEL UPPER PART .

Slacken screws (3) and adjust distance (A, B).

Tightening torque 51 37 4AZ .

Setting for longitudinal direction and retraction depth:

Side window glass (1) must be positioned at distance (A) to door window glass (2).

Dimension (A) = 15 ± 1 mm

Parallelism deviation ± 1 mm.

Side window glass (1) may have a max. short length (B) to door window glass (2).

Dimension (B) = 0 ± 1 mm

Adjusting retraction depth and longitudinal direction:

Attach special tool 51 3 220 to side window (1).

Slacken multi-tooth screws (2) with special tool 51 3 240.

Adjust longitudinal direction and retraction depth by moving side window (1).

Tightening torque 51 37 2AZ .

Check retraction depth and longitudinal direction.

Repeat adjustment procedure if necessary.

Preload setting:

NOTE: The preload can be checked with or without the weather strip. Preload is 1.0 mm greater with the window recess finisher strip. Magnet in special tool 51 0 341 creates the correct door window glass pre-tension on the seal system for measurement. No force must be exerted on the door or door window glass during measurement.

Insert special tool 51 0 341 in rotary striker of door lock and close rotary striker manually. Carefully close door.

Measure distance (A) between side window glass (1) and inner edge of door window glass (2).

NOTE: Measuring point 10 mm below upper edge of window glass.

With weather strip fitted (front and rear):

A = 20 ±1 mm

Without weather strip fitted (rear): A = 19 ±1 mm

Adjust preload:

Turn adjusting screw (1) 51 2 220 with special tool until correct pretension is reached.

NOTE: With hardtop closed, side window glass (2) must run correctly into hardtop seals (check only when weather strip fitted).

Checking adjustment:

Open door window and side window.

Close both windows simultaneously and check run-in of side window glass to door window glass.

Close retractable hardtop.

Hardtop seals must not be damaged.

Check run-in of both window glasses in hardtop seals.

After completion of adjusting procedure, INITIALIZE POWER WINDOW REGULATOR .
