Installing exhaust turbocharger

NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage of the electric wastegate valve controller .
Excessive force when removing and installing a jammed exhaust turbocharger may damage the electric wastegate valve controller .

Do not pull on the electrical wastegate valve controller or on the coupling rod.
Apply force only at the turbine housing and exhaust manifold.
Do not pull on the compressor housing.

NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Damage to the surface .
The use of metal-cutting tools (e.g., emery cloths) for cleaning surfaces can damage them and lead to leaks and/or engine damage .

Do not use any metal-cutting tools.

NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Contaminant or foreign body .
Contamination can result in malfunctions, loss of function or leaks .

Adhere to the utmost cleanliness.
Protect components from contamination e.g. by covering.
Close off line connections with seal plugs.

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The sealing surfaces must be free of oil, grease and cleaning agents.

Replace gasket.
Parts: Seal
Mount the seal so that the part number (1) remains legible.

Insert the seal (1) at the cylinder head and install.
Make sure the installation orientation of the seal (1) is correct.

Insert and position the exhaust turbocharger (1) from the top.

Guide in the exhaust turbocharger (1) down into the trim strip (2) and bring into contact with the cylinder head.

NOTE: Note the installation position of the component. The component can be installed in various installation positions.
Check the shifting strip (1) for the correct installation position.
The original BMW part number must be readable from the rear.

Feed in and install the shifting strip (1).
Replace all nuts.
Parts: Nuts

Tighten the nuts in the sequence (1) to (5).

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Exhaust turbocharger to cylinder head
M7 Observe tightening sequence! Replace nuts.	1. Joining torque	10 Nm
	2. tightening torque	10 Nm
	3. Joining torque	16 Nm
	4. tightening torque	16 Nm
	5. Tightening torque	16 Nm

Check sealing ring (1) for damage, replace if necessary.

Detach locks (1) from the holders in the arrow direction.
Ensure that locks (1) engage audibly.

Guide in and install the pressure pipe (1) on the exhaust turbocharger (2) in the arrow direction.
Ensure that locks (3) engage audibly.

Insert and install the line (2).

Tighten down screws (1).

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Charge air duct to oil sump
M6	tightening torque	8 Nm

Insert and install the coolant return line (3).
Insert the coolant feed line (2) and install.

Tighten down screw (1).

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Coolant line to exhaust turbocharger
M6	tightening torque	8 Nm

Connect the connector (1) and (2) lock.
Make sure the connector (1) and (2) engages audibly.

Perform initial filling with the additive when replacing the exhaust turbocharger

NOTE: RISK OF DAMAGE
Dry running due to insufficient initial filling of the exhaust turbocharger .
Damage to the exhaust turbocharger .

Be sure to do the initial filling when replacing the exhaust turbocharger.
Fill the exhaust turbocharger with the matching additive (see applicable BMW parts catalogue).

Fill additive (1) in the bore (2) of the oil feed line.

NOTE: TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Observe the sign in the engine compartment! Only fill with approved engine oil of the correct (Society of Automotive Engineers) vis grade.

Fill the exhaust turbocharger with engine oil to the edge by connecting the oil supply line (2).
Engine oil

Technically suitable engine oils for BMW Group engines
Insert and install the oil supply line (2).

Tighten down screw (1).

Oil feed line to exhaust turbocharger/crankcase
M6x12	Tightening torque	8 Nm

Insert and install the heat shield (2) on the holder (3).

Tighten down screw (1).

TIGHTENING TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Heat shield to cylinder head
M6x16	tightening torque	8 Nm
