Removing and installing/replacing catalytic converter cylinders 5-8 (S63B44 T 2) (X6 M)
Only perform this repair work on an engine that has cooled down.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove UPPER HEAT SHIELD .
- Remove ENGINE BULKHEAD .
- Remove EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Remove VACUUM PUMP .
- Remove RIGHT MONITORING SENSOR and LEFT MONITORING SENSOR .
- Remove TRAILING LINK on left and right.
- Remove REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
- Remove TOP LEFT STEERING GEAR COVER .
Removal:
Loosen screws (1).
Remove and replace clamps.
Release screws (1).
Release screw (2).
Bracket remove.
Release screws (1).
Release screw (2).
Bracket remove.
Loosen screws (1) on the catalytic converter cylinders 1-4 on the back of the cylinder head.
Release screws (1) on catalytic converter, cylinders 5-8, rear, at cylinder head.
Remove nuts (1) at bottom from holder for catalytic converter cylinders 1-4.
Remove catalytic converter from holder.
Remove nuts (1) at bottom from holder for catalytic converter cylinders 5-8.
Remove catalytic converter from holder.
Release screw (1).
Remove transmission oil lines from transmission.
Catch and dispose of escaping transmission oil.
Remove bolt (1) from holder for transmission oil lines at front.
Release screw (1).
Release transmission oil lines from holder on engine support arm and place to one side.
Lift up catalytic converter (1) cylinders 1-4 slightly.
Unscrew catalytic converter (1) cylinders 1-4 upwards in direction of arrow.
Lift up catalytic converter (1) cylinders 1-4 slightly.
Unscrew catalytic converter (1) cylinders 1-4 upwards in direction of arrow.
Preparation for installation:
Replace seals on exhaust turbocharger.
Installation:
Feed in catalytic converter (1) cylinders 5-8 in direction of arrow and install.
Feed in catalytic converter (1) cylinders 1-4 in direction of arrow and install.
Connect catalytic converters (1) and (2) to exhaust turbochargers.
Parts: Replace clamps (1).
Mount clamps (1).
Installation note:
Clamps must be installed with the screws toward the inside (graphic). Otherwise, a top heat shield can no longer be installed.
Mount holder.
Parts: Replace bolts (1).
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 18 32 2AZ .
Tighten screw (2).
Tightening torque 18 32 4AZ .
Mount holder.
Parts: Replace bolts (1).
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 18 32 2AZ .
Tighten screw (2).
Tightening torque 18 32 4AZ .
Parts: Replace bolts (1).
Tighten bolts (1) on catalytic converter cylinders 1-4 at rear on cylinder head.
Tightening torque 18 32 3AZ .
Parts: Replace bolts (1).
Tighten bolts (1) on catalytic converter cylinders 5-8 at rear on cylinder head.
Tightening torque 18 32 3AZ .
Parts: Replace nuts (1).
Mount catalytic converter to holder.
Tighten nuts (1) at bottom from holder for catalytic converter cylinders 1-4.
Tightening torque 18 32 4AZ .
Parts: Replace nuts (1).
Mount catalytic converter to holder.
Tighten nuts (1) at bottom from holder for catalytic converter cylinders 1-4.
Tightening torque 18 32 4AZ .
Tighten clamps (1).
Tightening torque 18 32 1AZ .
Installation note:
The ends of the V-band clamps must rest parallel to each other.
Tightening torque 18 32 1AZ .
Installation note:
If you can see a gap between the ends of the V-band clamps, release and then repeat the screw connection.
Tightening torque 18 32 1AZ .
Installation note:
If the ends of the V-band clamps are positioned under each other, release and then repeat the screw connection.
Tightening torque 18 32 1AZ .
Parts: Replace gaskets.
Connect transmission oil lines to transmission.
Tighten screw (1).
Tightening torque 17 22 1AZ .
Fasten transmission oil lines to holder on engine support arm and tighten bolt (1).
Tightening torque 17 22 3AZ .
Tighten bolt (1) on front holder.
Tightening torque 17 22 3AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Install HEAT SHIELD at top.
- Install VACUUM PUMP .
- Install LEFT AND RIGHT TENSION STRUT .
- Install ENGINE BULKHEAD .
- Install EXHAUST SYSTEM .
- Install RIGHT MONITORING SENSOR and LEFT MONITORING SENSOR .
- Install REINFORCEMENT PLATE .
- Install STEERING GEAR COVER at top left.
- Check OIL LEVEL IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION .
- Check exhaust system for leaks.
