Crankshaft Overview
When working on the engine, secure the engine to the engine and transmission support ENGINE, SECURING ON ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION HOLDER .
Before Removal the crankshaft, prepare a location to place it so that it does not rest on the sensor wheel, refer to -Item 10- CRANKSHAFT OVERVIEW or damage it.
If large quantities of metal particles or abraded material are detected during engine repairs, it may mean the crankshaft or rod bearings are damaged. Perform the following procedure after the repair to prevent subsequent damage.
Clean the oil channels carefully.
Replace the oil check valve.
Replace the oil spray jets.
Replace the engine oil cooler.
Replace the oil filter.
- Cylinder Block
- Checking the cylinder bore, refer to Figure.
- Piston and Cylinder Dimensions, refer to PISTON AND CYLINDER DIMENSIONS .
- Piston Cooling Oil Spray Jet
- For crankshaft bearings 2 through 7.
- Opening pressure: 2.0 bar.
- Removing and Installing, refer to Fig 4.
- Note, refer to OIL PAN OVERVIEW .
- Bearing Shell
- For cylinder block with oil groove.
- Mark used bearing shells.
- Crankshaft Bearing Shells, Allocating, refer to MAIN BEARING SHELLS .
- Crankshaft
- If replacing the crankshaft, allocate the crankshaft bearing shells, refer to MAIN BEARING SHELLS .
- After removal, place in such a way it does not rest on sensor wheel -item 10- and damage it.
- Axial Play, Measuring, refer to CRANKSHAFT, MEASURING AXIAL CLEARANCE .
- Radial Play, Measuring, refer to CRANKSHAFT, MEASURING RADIAL CLEARANCE .
- Crankshaft Dimensions, refer to CRANKSHAFT DIMENSIONS .
- Timing chain wheel built into crankshaft.
- Thrust Washer
- For bearing cap 5.
- Pay attention to the locating point.
- Lubricating groove faces crankshaft.
- Bearing Cap
- Bearing cap 1: belt pulley side
- Bearing cap 5: with notches for thrust washers.
- Bearing shell retaining tabs in cylinder block and in bearing cap must align.
- Bolt
- 30 Nm + 180° (1 /2 ) turn.
- Replace
- Use old bolts to measure radial play.
- Bearing Shell
- For bearing cap without oil groove.
- mark used bearing shells.
- Crankshaft Bearing Shells, Allocating, refer to MAIN BEARING SHELLS .
- Thrust Washer
- For bearing cap 5
- Pay attention to the locating point.
- Lubricating groove faces crankshaft.
- Sensor Wheel
- For the Engine Speed Sensor -G28-.
- Replace
- Installation, refer to Fig 2.
- Bolt
- Replace
- if bolts were removed, replace sensor wheel.
- Insert using locking compound. For the correct locking.
- Tightening sequence, refer to Fig 2.
Proceed as follows:
Sensor wheel may only be installed once, since attachment points -arrows- of countersunk screws -1- in sensor wheel -2- are so severely deformed after mounting the second time that bolt heads make contact on the crankshaft -3- and sensor wheel lies loosely under the bolt heads.
-- Clean contact surface between crankshaft and sensor wheel, it must be free of oil and grease.
-- Lightly coat contact surface between crankshaft and sensor wheel with locking compound.
Installed position:
- The "VR6" marking -2- must be positioned at the hole for the bolt -3- that goes into the crank pin of the crankshaft (the contour of the crankshaft is shown by the dashed line -1-).
- The gap -arrow- in the ring gear lies across from the designation.
Ignore the second "VR6" imprint -item 4-.
-- Tighten sensor wheel bolts in 3 stages as follows:
-- Insert bolts with locking compound and tighten by hand.
-- Tighten the bolt -3- to 10 Nm and an additional 90° (1 /4 turn).
-- Tighten both other bolts to 10 Nm and an additional 90° (1 /4 turn).
