Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Toyota Yaris. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using a Techstream. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (RESISTANCE)
    1. Disconnect the C18 Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor connector.

      1 - 2 1850 to 2450 Ω at 20°C (68°F)
    4. Reconnect the CMP sensor connector.

NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (See  REMOVAL   )

    OK: Go to next step

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM)

NE- (C18-2) or NE- (C20-121) - Body ground
    4. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    5. Reconnect the CMP sensor connector.

NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

    OK: Go to next step

  3. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR)
    1. Check the CMP sensor installation.

      OK:

      Sensor is installed correctly.

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (See  INSPECTION PROCEDURE   )

NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step

  5. CHECK CAMSHAFT (TIMING ROTOR)
    1. Check the timing rotor of the camshaft.

      OK:

Camshaft timing rotor does not have any cracks or deformation.

NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step

  6. REPLACE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
    1. Replace the camshaft (See REMOVAL  ).
  7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0340)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the tester ON.
    4. Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    5. Start the engine.
    6. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    7. Read DTCs.
