Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2008 Toyota Yaris. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DTC P0011 or P0012 may be set when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain set even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Foreign objects are filtered out by the oil filter.

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using a Techstream. Freeze frame data record the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data, from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011 OR P0012)
    1. Connect a Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    4. Read DTCs.

      HINT:

If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

B: GO TO DTC CHART (See  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART   )

    A: Go to next step

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine and turn the tester ON.
    3. Warm up the engine.
    4. On the tester, select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).
    5. Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the tester.

      OK

      TESTER OPERATIONS SPECIFIED CONDITIONS CHART

      Tester Operations Specified Conditions
      OCV OFF Normal engine speed
OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON)

    NG:  Go to step  4

    OK: Go to next step

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012)
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    4. Start the engine and warm it up.
    5. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the tester.
    6. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    7. Read DTCs.

      OK:

      No DTC output.

    NG: Go to step 4

    OK: END

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE TIMING CHAIN OR JUMPED TEETH)
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover.
    3. Fig 1: Identifying Timing Marks And Groove

    4. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing sprocket and camshaft timing gear are facing upward as shown in the illustration.

If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.

      OK:

Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration.

    5. Reinstall the cylinder head cover.

NG: ADJUST VALVE TIMING  (See REMOVAL )

    OK: Go to next step

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV)
    1. Remove the OCV.
    2. Fig 2: Identifying Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve Assembly (OCV)

    3. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.

      Standard resistance:

      6.9 to 7.9 Ω at 20°C (68°F)

    4. Apply the battery voltage to terminal 1 and terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      OK:

      Valve moves quickly.

    5. Reinstall the OCV.

NG: REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (See  REMOVAL   )

    OK: Go to next step

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
    1. Remove the generator.
    2. Remove the OCV filter.
    3. Fig 3: Identifying Oil Control Valve Filter

    4. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK:

      Filter is not clogged.

    5. Reinstall the OCV filter.
    6. Reinstall the generator.

NG: CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER

    OK: Go to next step

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY
    1. Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly (See REMOVAL ).
    6. Driver the vehicle for more than 10 minutes.
    7. Read output DTCs using the tester.

      Standard:

      No DTC output.

      HINT:

DTC P0011 or P0012 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay registered even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

NG: REPLACE ECM (See  REMOVAL   )

    OK: END
