Manual Transmission Assembly: Installation

Set the release fork, release bearing and release lever shaft to the transmission. Refer to CLUTCH SYSTEM>RELEASE BEARING AND LEVER>INSTALLATION>STI MODEL .
Replace the differential side retainer oil seal. Refer to MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND DIFFERENTIAL (6MT) (TY85)>DIFFERENTIAL SIDE RETAINER OIL SEAL>REPLACEMENT .
NOTE: Be sure to replace the oil seal after removing the front drive shaft.
Strike and bend the transmission hanger of transmission rear with a rubber hammer etc. so that it gets in contact with the transmission case.
CAUTION: Do not apply excessive load or impact to the transmission case.

Install the transmission cushion rubber to the transmission, and tighten the bolt (A).
Install the transmission cushion rubber to the center crossmember, and temporarily tighten the nut (B).
Tightening torque:

Bolt (A)

35 N.m (3.6 kgf-m, 25.8 ft-lb)

Install the transmission assembly onto the engine.
Tighten the bolts and nuts which hold the lower side of transmission to the engine.
NOTE:
- Make sure that the main shaft spline is completely inserted.
- Make sure that the rear end of the engine is set low.
Tightening torque:

50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb)

Loosen the turnbuckle of ST to return the engine to its original position.

Move the transmission to the right side of the vehicle, and attach the joint COMPL, stay bolts and reverse check cable.
Tightening torque:

T1: 12 N.m (1.2 kgf-m, 8.9 ft-lb)

T2: 32 N.m (3.3 kgf-m, 23.6 ft-lb)

Install the front crossmember and rear crossmember.
Tighten the transmission cushion rubber mounting nut.
Tightening torque:

T1: 35 N.m (3.6 kgf-m, 25.8 ft-lb)

T2: 70 N.m (7.1 kgf-m, 51.6 ft-lb)

T3: 140 N.m (14.3 kgf-m, 103 ft-lb)

Lower the vehicle.
Install the starter. Refer to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (STI)>STARTER>INSTALLATION .
Tighten the bolts which hold the upper side of the transmission to the engine.
Tightening torque:

50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb)
Make sure that the release bearing is completely inserted.
NOTE:
- Push the release fork towards the operating cylinder side until a clicking sound is heard. Pull the release fork towards the engine side. If the release fork is not in contact with the case, the setting is complete.
- Confirm that the boot cover is set securely.

Install the pitching stopper bracket, clutch return spring bracket, and transmission radio ground cable.
Tightening torque:

41 N.m (4.2 kgf-m, 30.2 ft-lb)
Install the pitching stopper. Refer to MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND DIFFERENTIAL (6MT) (TY85)>TRANSMISSION MOUNTING SYSTEM>INSTALLATION>PITCHING STOPPER .
Install the return spring.
Install the operating cylinder.
Tightening torque:

41 N.m (4.2 kgf-m, 30.2 ft-lb)

NOTE: Check that the clutch hose is routed properly.
Install the starter assembly. Refer to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (STI)>STARTER>INSTALLATION .
Install the transmission radio ground terminal.
Tightening torque:

13 N.m (1.3 kgf-m, 9.6 ft-lb)
Install the secondary air combination valve. Refer to EMISSION CONTROL (AUX. EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES) (STI)>SECONDARY AIR COMBINATION VALVE>INSTALLATION>SECONDARY AIR COMBINATION VALVE LH .
Connect the following harness connectors, and then install the intercooler stay RH No. 2.

Lift up the vehicle.
Set the ST to differential side retainer.

ST 28399SA010 OIL SEAL PROTECTOR
Install the front drive shaft into the transmission.
NOTE: Replace the circlip of drive shaft with a new part.
Install the front drive shaft into transmission, remove the ST and insert the drive shaft securely.

Install the ball joint of the front arm.
Tightening torque:

50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb)
Install the stabilizer link.
Tightening torque:

60 N.m (6.1 kgf-m, 44.3 ft-lb)

NOTE: Use a new self-locking nut.
Install the propeller shaft. Refer to DRIVE SHAFT SYSTEM>PROPELLER SHAFT>INSTALLATION .
Install the center exhaust cover.
Tightening torque:

18 N.m (1.8 kgf-m, 13.3 ft-lb)
Install the center exhaust pipe. Refer to EXHAUST (STI)>CENTER EXHAUST PIPE>INSTALLATION .
Fill the transmission gear oil. Refer to MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND DIFFERENTIAL (6MT) (TY85)>TRANSMISSION GEAR OIL>REPLACEMENT .
Lower the vehicle.
Install the intercooler. Refer to INTAKE (INDUCTION) (STI)>INTERCOOLER>INSTALLATION .
Connect the battery ground terminal.
