Remove/install rear shock absorber - AR32.25-P-0110EWA

DANGER Risk of injury  . Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Empty left and right air spring using diagnostic system    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04A
    INSTALLATION NOTES
Inflate air spring properly.
The air spring can otherwise be damaged and fail later.
 
2.1 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key from electronic ignition lock control unit MODEL 212.0/1, 218
with CODE 488 (Steel/air suspension)
without CODE 889 (KEYLESS-GO)

2.2 Switch off ignition and remove transmitter key or KEYLESS-GO start/stop button from electronic ignition lock control unit MODEL 212.0/1, 218

3 Remove left or right rear wheel

4 Remove left and right rear fender liner MODEL 212.0/1, 218

5 Press locks (6e) of cover (6f) together using a suitable sleeve or box wrench (arrow) and detach cover (6f) from spring control arm (6)    
6 Unscrew nut (5) and pull bolt (4) out of spring control arm (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, shock absorber to spring control arm *BA32.25-P-1001-03M 
7 Detach electrical connector from left rear-axle damping valve unit (Y53) or right rear-axle damping valve unit (Y54)    
8.1 Remove left or right side cover in the trunk MODEL 212.0/1, 218.3

8.2 Remove left or right side trim in load compartment MODEL 212.2

9 Unscrew nuts (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, damper to body *BA32.25-P-1002-03M 
10 Push shock absorber (7) together and remove toward rear INSTALLATION NOTES
The outer boot on the shock absorber (7) must not be pushed in during assembly; rectify any deformations.
Otherwise the movement of the spring will damage the spring bellows on the inside.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Push the shock absorber (7) together, position it in the spring control arm (6) and guide the suspension strut mount (2) into the body opening.
 
INSPECT Check     
11 Check shock absorber (7) for damage If damage is present: ↓
Install a new shock absorber (7).

12 Check suspension strut mount (2) for damage If damage is present:

Install a new suspension strut mount (2).
 
13 Check lower elastomer bearing (7a) for damage If damage is present:

Install a new shock absorber (7).
 
14 Unscrew nut (8) from piston rod (9) When replacing the shock absorber (7) or suspension strut mount (2).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, damper to piston rod *BA32.25-P-1003-03M 
15 Remove suspension strut mount (2) When replacing the shock absorber (7) or suspension strut mount (2).  
16 Install in the reverse order    
17 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and delete    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04A
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
18 Perform engine test run and check AIRmatic or steel/air suspension for proper operation
