Remove/install wheel carrier - AR35.20-P-0115EW

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
IMPORTANT Notes on repair work on suspension components   AH00.00-P-0100-01A
1 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100EWS
2 Remove rear wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
3 Remove twelve-point collar nut (12) from rear axle shaft (37)   AR35.30-P-0115-01TX 
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace twelve-point collar nut (12) and secure doubly.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Collar nut, rear axle shaft to rear axle shaft flange *BA35.30-P-1001-01J 
4 Remove brake disk MODEL 212 except AMG AR42.10-P-0250EW
Model 218 except AMG AR42.10-P-0220EL
MODEL 212, 218 with AMG AR42.10-P-0250CMG
5 Remove parking-brake brake shoes (103)   AR42.20-P-0530EW
6 Remove rear brake cable (103a) from wheel carrier (7)   AR42.20-P-0525EW
7 Remove left rear-axle rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear-axle rpm sensor (L6/4) from wheel carrier (7)    
8 Unclip electrical lines from wheel carrier (7)    
9 Raise wheel carrier (7) using transmission jack and transmission platform until rear axle shaft (37) is roughly horizontal INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Tighten threaded connections of strut rod (3), camber strut (2) and thrust arm (5) as well as the tie rod (4) and the spring control arm (6).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Spring control arm nuts and bolts on wheel carrier must be replaced each time they are removed.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, spring control arm to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1002-01D 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, camber strut to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1002-02I 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, strut rod to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1002-03I 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, tie rod to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1001-04I 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, thrust arm to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1002-05G 
10 Detach tie rod (4) from wheel carrier (7). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw on bolted connection loosely.  
11 Detach thrust arm (5) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw on bolted connection loosely.  
12 Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw on bolted connection loosely.  
13 Detach torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw on bolted connection loosely.  
14 Check whether the rear axle shaft (37) is firmly seated in the rear axle shaft flange SPECIAL TOOL Extraction and insertion tool Fig 3

If the rear axle shaft (37) is difficult to remove

Press rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle shaft flange.

15 Detach spring control arm (6) from wheel carrier (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Screw on bolted connection loosely.  
16 Remove wheel carrier (7) with brake cover plate (112) and wheel bearing (10) from rear axle shaft (37) NOTES
Carefully remove the rubber boot and rotor for left rear-axle rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear-axle rpm sensor (L6/4) on rear axle shaft (37). So as to prevent the rubber boot and rotor for left rear-axle rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear-axle rpm sensor (L6/4) on rear axle shaft (37) from getting damaged.
 
17 Detach wheel bearing (10) from wheel carrier (7); to do this, remove bolts (11) When replacing the wheel bearing (10)
IMPORTANT The wheel carrier (7) spare part is delivered with mounted wheel bearing (10).
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Wheel bearing to wheel carrier *BA35.20-P-1001-06D 
18 Remove brake cover plate (112) from wheel carrier (7) When replacing the wheel carrier (7)  
19 Install in the reverse order    
20 Adjust parking brake   AR42.20-P-0540EW
21 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200EW
