Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
  • If there is any problem in the CAN bus lines, an incorrect diagnostic trouble code may be stored. Prior to this diagnosis, diagnose the CAN bus lines.
  • Before replacing the ECU, ensure that the CAN bus lines is normal.
  1. STEP 1. Check the CAN bus system diagnosis. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), perform CAN bus diagnosis (Refer to EXPLANATION ABOUT THE M.U.T.-III CAN BUS DIAGNOSTICS ).

    Q: Is the check result satisfactory? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 2.
    2. NO:  Repair the CAN bus lines (Refer to CAN BUS DIAGNOSTIC TABLE ). Then go to  Step 24.
  2. STEP 2. Check the MFI system actuator test. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to check the MFI system actuator test (Refer to ACTUATOR TEST REFERENCE TABLE ).

    • Item 14: Cooling fan motor

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to  Step 23.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 3.
  3. STEP 3. Check the MFI system diagnostic trouble code. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), perform MFI system diagnostic trouble code (Refer to DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION ).

    Q: Is any diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Repair the MFI system (Refer to INSPECTION CHART FOR DIAGNOSIS CODE ). Then go to  Step 24.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 4.
  4. STEP 4. Check the A/T system diagnostic trouble code. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), perform A/T system diagnostic trouble code (Refer to DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION ).

    Q: Is any diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Repair the A/T system (Refer to DIAGNOSIS CODE CHART ). Then go to  Step 24.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 5.
  5. STEP 5. Check the A/C system diagnostic trouble code. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), check A/C system diagnostic trouble code (Refer to DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION ).

    Q: Is any diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Repair the A/C system (Refer to DIAGNOSIS CODE CHART ). Then go to  Step 24.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 6.
  6. STEP 6. Check the ETACS system diagnostic trouble code. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), check ETACS system diagnostic trouble code (Refer to DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION ).

    Q: Is any diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Repair the ETACS system (Refer to DIAGNOSIS CODE CHART ). Then go to  Step 24.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 7.
  7. STEP 7. Check the radiator fan relay, the condenser fan relay, and the fan control relay. 

    Refer to CONDENSER FAN RELAY CHECK  .

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 8.
    2. NO:  Replace the damaged relay. Then go to  Step 24.
  8. STEP 8. Check the radiator fan motor and the condenser fan motor. 

    Refer to COOLING FAN MOTOR CHECK  .

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 9.
    2. NO:  Replace the damaged fan motor (Refer to RADIATOR  ). Then go to  Step 24.
  9. STEP 9. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between fusible link (SBF4) and radiator fan relay connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 10.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  10. STEP 10. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between fusible link (SBF3) and condenser fan relay connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 11.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  11. STEP 11. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between fusible link (SBF3) and fan control relay connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 12.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  12. STEP 12. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between radiator fan relay connector and radiator fan motor connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 13.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  13. STEP 13. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between radiator fan motor connector and fan control relay connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 14.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  14. STEP 14. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply line between condenser fan relay connector and condenser fan motor connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 15.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  15. STEP 15. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in power supply and control line between fan control relay connector and condenser fan relay connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 16.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  16. STEP 16. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in body ground line between fan control relay and body ground. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 17.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  17. STEP 17. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in body ground line between condenser fan motor connector and body ground. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 18.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  18. STEP 18. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in F/LO line between radiator fan relay connector and ETACS-ECU connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 19.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  19. STEP 19. Check of short to power supply, short to ground, open circuit and harness damage in F/HI line between condenser fan relay connector and ETACS-ECU connector. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 20.
    2. NO:  Repair the connector(s) or wiring harness. Then go to  Step 24.
  20. STEP 20. Check the fusible link SBF3 and SBF4. 

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 21.
    2. NO:  Replace the damaged fusible link. Then go to  Step 24.
  21. STEP 21. Check the ETACS system diagnostic trouble code. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III), check ETACS system diagnostic trouble code (Refer to DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION ).

    Q: Is any diagnostic trouble code stored? 

    1. YES:  Replace the ETACS-ECU (Refer to ETACS-ECU ). Then go to  Step 24.
    2. NO:  Go to Step 22.
  22. STEP 22. Check the MFI system actuator test. 

    Using scan tool (M.U.T.-III) to check the MFI system actuator test (Refer to ACTUATOR TEST REFERENCE TABLE ).

    • Item 14: Cooling fan motor

    Q: Is the check result normal? 

    1. YES:  Go to Step 23.
    2. NO:  Replace the ECM (Refer to ECM ). Then go to  Step 24.
  23. STEP 23. Check the symptoms. 

    Q: Does the radiator fan and condenser fan operate normal? 

    1. YES:  It can be assumed that this malfunction is intermittent (Refer to HOW TO COPE WITH INTERMITTENT MALFUNCTION ).
    2. NO:  Replace the ECM (Refer to ECM ). Then go to Step 24.
  24. STEP 24. Check the symptoms. 

    Q: Does the radiator fan and condenser fan operate normal? 

    1. YES:  The procedure is complete.
    2. NO:  Return to  Step 1.
