Removing and installing, sealing or replacing oil sump (B36 engine) (Cooper base)

Special tools required: 

Preliminary work needed: 

Attention! 

Engines with surface sealant:

Maximum  processing time for sealing bead is 10 minutes  .

Commissioning of the assembly is not possible until 25 minutes  after the processing time.

Non-observance can lead to leaks in the assembly.

Removal: 

Release screws (1) from pressure pipe.

Unlock connector (1) and detach.

Remove screw (1).

Release positive battery cable from clip (2).

Place wiring harness to one side.

Release screws (1) from transmission.

Release screws (2-17).

Engine with liquid sealing compound: 

Attention! 

The oil sump can only be loosened in the areas (1) where an aperture is present in the oil sump.

Use a mounting lever (1) to release oil sump in arrow direction  at the correct location.

Preparation for installation: 

Clean seal residues from oil sump and crankcase.

Attention! 

Do not use any metal-cutting tools (e.g. emery cloth).

Attention! 

Do not use any metal-cutting tools (e.g. emery cloth).

Clean the sealing residue off the sealing surface (1) using special tool 11 4 472 and 11 4 472.

Installation note: 

CLEAN THE SEALING SURFACE (1) USING BRAKE CLEANER 3.3 .

The sealing surface (1) must be free of oil, grease and cleaning agents.

Attention! 

Do not use any metal-cutting tools (e.g. emery cloth).

Clean sealing residue off the sealing surface (1) with special tool 11 4 471 and 11 4 472

Installation note: 

CLEAN THE SEALING SURFACE (1) USING BRAKE CLEANER 3.3 .

The sealing surface (1) must be free of oil, grease and cleaning agents.

Have special tool 2 469 803 ready.

Apply sealing compound (1) on the special tool 2 469 803 as shown.

Parts: SEALING COMPOUND 2.2 .

Attention!

Applying sealing compound without replacing front bottom timing case cover: 

Apply SEALING COMPOUND 2.2  in this area (1).

Make sure that the sealing bead runs along the inner edge.

The oil return orifice (arrow) must be rounded completely.

NOTE: The oil sump must be installed approximately 10 minutes after application of the sealing compound.

Sealant height approximately 2 to 2.5 mm.

Applying sealing compound after replacing front bottom timing case cover: 

Apply SEALING COMPOUND 2.2  in this area (1).

Make sure that the sealing bead runs along the inner edge.

The oil return orifice must be rounded completely.

Sealing bead (1) must overlap  with the seal (2) of the timing case cover by approx. 5 mm.

NOTE: The oil sump must be installed approximately 10 minutes after application of the sealing compound.

Sealant height approximately 2 to 2.5 mm.

Installation: 

NOTE: Special tool 11 8 780 is only necessary if the engine or the transmission is removed.

Position special tool 11 8 780 with transmission bolt (1) so that engine oil pan is exactly flush with engine block.

If necessary, replace lining sleeves.

Attention! 

The use of screws of improper length can lead to component damage.

Note the exact screw length.

Install screws that correspond to the original length.

The oil pan can be damaged if the wrong screw length is used!

Ensure that the correct  screw (2) (M8x40) is used for attaching the oil pan at the transmission.

The screw (1) (mounting bolt of starter) must never  be used to attach the oil pan.

NOTE: Tighten all screws (2-17) on oil pan with 5 Nm  .

Tighten transmission bolts (1) to 5 Nm  .

Tighten down all screws on oil sump.

Tightening torque: 11 13 2AZ .

Tighten down Torx screws (1).

Tightening torque: 24 00 1AZ .

Tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque: 12 52 4AZ .

Clip in positive batter/cable in clip (2).

Attach and lock connector (1).

Make sure the connector (1) engages audibly.

Tighten screws (1) of pressure pipe.

Tightening torque 11 61 3AZ .
