Motor oil change (B38) (Cooper Convertible)

When carrying out repair on vehicle, always wear oil- and heat-resistant hand protection incl. forearm protection, face protection and protective apron.

Attention! 

Carry out engine oil service only when the engine is operating temperature.

It is essential to adhere to the exact capacities specified.

Overfilling the engine with motor oil will result in engine damage  .

Recycling: 

Catch and dispose of used oil in a suitable collecting vessel.

Observe country-specific waste disposal regulations.

Preliminary work needed: 

• Opening the oil filler cap
• Remove front UNDERBODY PROTECTION .

Removal: 

Open service flaps (1) in front underbody protection.

Remove oil drain plug (1).

Drain the motor oil.

Undo oil drain plug (1) at hexagon head (2).

Drain the motor oil.

Undo oil filter cover (1) at hexagon head (2).

Installation: 

Check the freedom of movement of the return check valve (1).

Replace oil filter (1).

Parts:  Oil filter (1).

Ensure that the oil filter (1) engages audibly. Replace O-ring (2) and coat with motor oil.

Replace screw with O-ring (1).

Parts:  Screw with O-ring (1).

Wet the O-ring (1) with motor oil.

The thread (1) must be cleaned before installation without fail with original BMW brake cleaner (part number: 83 19 2 365 214)!

The thread must be completely free of motor oil!

Attention! 

Risk of damage!

Elastomers (O-rings) may not tap brake cleaner!

Let the brake cleaner dry completely, if necessary fuse dry with compressed air.

Install oil filter cover (1) and tighten at hexagon head (2).

Tightening torque 11 42 1AZ .

Replace the sealing ring.

Part:  Sealing ring.

Tighten oil drain plug (1). Tightening torque 11 13 1AZ .

Close service flaps (1) in front underbody protection.

Pour in MOTOR OIL .

Close oil filler cap.

Recommendation: Check oil level.

Prerequisite  :

• Vehicle is in a horizontal position

Carry out an electronic oil measurement.

Top up motor oil if necessary.

Required follow-up work: 

• Install front UNDERBODY PROTECTION .
• Perform the CBS RESET .
