51 17 001 Removing (replacing) and installing cover on soft top compartment lid

Special tools required: 

• 00 9 321

Open the soft top compartment lid as shown.

Switch off the ignition and secure the soft top compartment lid against lowering.

Installation note: 

Pack grease into two opposite positions in socket.

The grease spreads after installation on the ball pin all round in the ball socket.

Dismantling/installing ball sockets: 

1. Push on clamp in direction of groove with screwdriver
2. Lift off ball socket from ball pin
3. Slide clamp back
4. Fit ball socket on ball stud and snap into place with force

Remove ball head (1) on the right and left as described above.

Press the hydraulic cylinders (1) together and stow them on clean cloths (2) in the soft top compartment. (risk of dirt for soft top)

Remove protective caps (1).

Release screw (2) and loosen screw (3) to the point where holder (4) can be folded down.

Tightening torque 51 17 7AZ .

Release nuts (1 and 2) on soft top compartment lid (3) on left and right.

Remove cover on soft top compartment lid.

Set down cover of soft top compartment lid in such as way that the installation position is largely retained.

Replacement: 

• Convert trim strip on cover for soft top compartment lid on left and right. See 51 17 101 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT AND RIGHT TRIM STRIP ON COVER FOR SOFT TOP COMPARTMENT LID .
• Convert trim strip on cover for soft top compartment lid in the middle. See 51 17 100 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING TRIM STRIP ON COVER FOR SOFT TOP COMPARTMENT LID CENTER .
• Install sealing tape on cover for soft top compartment lid

Installation note: 

Gaskets (1) and sealing rings (2) must not be damaged.

Make sure gaskets (1) on cover for soft top compartment lid are correctly seated.

Installation note: 

Gasket (1) must be in contact with the rear window (2) with a 1 mm preload.

Gasket (1) must be parallel to the rear window (2) and cover of the soft top compartment lid (3) along its entire length.

If a new gasket (1) is used, it must be adjusted such that the insert (4) is in contact with the rear window.

The insert (4) must be removed after the adjusting procedures are completed.

Prerequisite: 

• Soft top correctly adjusted. See 54 34 100 ADJUSTING SOFT TOP .
• Soft top compartment lid correctly adjusted. See 41 63 068 ADJUSTING SOFT TOP COMPARTMENT LID .

Installation sequence: 

1. Secure the cover on the soft top compartment lid with nuts (1) on the left/right but do not tighten.
2. Tighten nuts (2) on soft top compartment lid (3) on the left/right.

   Tightening torque 51 17 10AZ .

3. Mount holder for hydraulic cylinder.

   Tightening torque 51 17 7AZ .

4. Mount hydraulic cylinder on soft top compartment lid.
5. Close soft top compartment lid and rear window.
6. Check preload of gasket and adjust by shifting gasket.
7. Open soft top compartment lid and tighten screws (1) on the left/right from the inside to the outside.
8. If a new gasket is being used, the insert must be removed.
