Remove/Install Camshafts - AR05.20-P-6992MFG

WARNING Risk of injury.  Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
WARNING Risk of injury.  Moving parts can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases even sever extremities. No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating area of mechanical components when moving components. AS00.00-Z-0009-01A
CAUTION Risk of injury  caused by scraping or cutting body parts on sharp vehicle parts Always wear protective gloves when working on or near sharp and non-deburred vehicle parts.
Deburr repair panels.

CAUTION Risk of injury  to skin and eyes due to handling of engine oil. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing engine oil Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

  General information on checking camshafts and bearing points of camshafts   AH05.20-P-1000-09SZ 
REMOVING Remove     
1 Disconnect ground line of on-board electrical system battery (G1). NOTES Disconnect ground line of on-board electrical system battery (G1).
Otherwise the CAMTRONIC will be damaged.

2 Remove cylinder head cover.   AR01.20-P-5014MFG
3 Remove fuel high-pressure pump.   AR07.02-P-1020MFG
4 Remove camshaft positioners.   AR05.20-P-7204MFG 
5 Remove screws/bolts (3) and remove hold-down tools.    
6 Remove holder for intake camshaft (1) and exhaust camshaft (2).   AR05.20-P-6020-03MFG

7 Check position of line cams (21). NOTES Line cams (21) of exhaust camshaft (2) must be in position (A).
Otherwise, exhaust camshaft (2) and cylinder head (5) will be damaged.
If line cams (21) of exhaust camshaft (2) are in position (A),

continue to follow the repair process.
If line cams (21) of exhaust camshaft (2) are in position (B),

continue to follow the repair process.
 
8 Remove intake camshaft (1) and exhaust camshaft (2).    
INSPECT Check     
9 Check intake camshaft (1) and exhaust camshaft (2) for damage and dimensional accuracy. IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools 
Outside micrometer
Diameter of camshaft fitted bearing journal
If there are problems,

Replace intake camshaft (1) or exhaust camshaft (2).

10 Check cylinder head (5) and compensating elements (6) for damage. If damage is present,

replace cylinder head (5) and compensating elements (6).
Replace cylinder head.

    Replace compensating elements. AR05.00-P-2011MFG 
11 Insert calibrating tools (15, 16, 17) as shown on exhaust camshaft (2). If exhaust camshaft (2) is reinstalled or line cams (21) are in position (B).
NOTES Calibrating tools (15, 16, 17) must be completely flush.
Otherwise, the component parts may be damaged in the course of the repair process.
IMPORTANT Only move actuator (19) if calibrating tools (15, 17) are in position.
SPECIAL TOOL Assembly tool
If calibrating tool (16) cannot be fitted,

move actuators (19) in the direction of arrow (A) on exhaust camshaft (2) until actuators (19) touch calibrating tools (15, 17) and calibrating tool (16) can be inserted.
NOTES Actuators (19) may not be moved too far. Otherwise, spring-loaded balls (20) will be ejected and exhaust camshaft (2) will need to be replaced.

INSTALLING Install     
12 Install intake camshaft (1) and exhaust camshaft (2).    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS Specified engine oils (service) - Overview IMPORTANT Lubricate compensating elements (6) and camshaft bearing points. BB00.40-P-0223-02A
13 Attach holder for intake camshaft (1) and exhaust camshaft (2).   AR05.20-P-6020-03MFG 
    SPECIAL TOOL Holding device Fig 1
14 Insert hold-down tool and screw in bolts (3). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt for camshaft hold-down tool *BA05.20-P-1001-02K 
15 Install camshaft positioners.   AR05.20-P-7204MFG 
16 Install fuel high-pressure pump.   AR07.02-P-1020MFG
17 Install cylinder head cover. IMPORTANT Only install upper engine cover after the leak test. AR01.20-P-5014MFG
18 Attach ground line of the on-board electrical system battery (G1).   AR54.10-P-0003MFA
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
19 Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.    
20 Install upper engine cover.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP01.10-P-2405-01K
