Model 217

Function requirements, general

Exterior lights, general

The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.

IMPORTANT For active transport mode, rolling mode or production mode, several exterior lights functions are available to a limited extent only.

A differentiation is made between the following versions of the front lamp units in accordance with the vehicle equipment:

(with CODE 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))

The exterior lights contain the following functions:

Further functions are described in separate documents:

Function sequence for thermal management of front lamp unit (with CODE 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or CODE 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), model 217)

The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the area of the actuated LEDs. If the LEDs or plastic housings of the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuation currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby minimizing heat development.

For active ventilation, the following additional components are integrated into the front lamp units:

Both fan motors are always actuated in a front lamp unit. The fan motors are either actuated immediately or with a time delay, depending on the active light function. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.

Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights

By switching off the exterior lights, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.

IMPORTANT Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.

The low beams may be switched on because of the auto on/off driving lights, the daytime running lights (only in vehicles with code 498 (Japan version)) and LED version lamp unit (static) or manually via the exterior lights switch and are switched off with circuit 15 OFF if the engine was previously turned off and the vehicle speed is v < 3 km/h. The standing lights may be switched on because of the manually switched on low beams, the auto on/off driving lights, the daytime running lights (only on vehicles with code 498 (Japan version) and LED lamp unit (dynamic)) or manually via the exterior lights switch. If the driver door is opened with terminal 15R ON or if the driver door is closed when terminal 15C is switched off, the standing light is switched off.

As soon as the energy management detects that the starting capability of the engine is impaired, the standing light is switched off.

IMPORTANT If the "Outer OFF delay function" is activated via the COMAND controller unit (model 217 up to 30.11.2017, model 222 up to 31.05.2017) or via the head unit (model 217 as of 01.12.2017, model 222 as of 01.06.2017), then this switches on automatically after the engine has been switched off. The standing light remains on for the configured period from the point at which the last door or the trunk was closed. The "Outer OFF delay time" function is described in the "Ambient illumination, function" document.
