Standing/parking lights, general
The standing lights/parking lights actuation is used to mark the parked vehicle in poor visibility.
If the vehicle is locked from outside (up to 31.05.2014) or with the status of circuit 15 is OFF (as of 01.06.2014), the standing/parking lights actuation is deactivated depending of the energy level.
The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN (CAN B) to the front SAM control unit (N10/6).
The standing/parking lights actuation is comprised of the following partial functions:
- Standing lamp actuation function sequence

- Function sequence for driving light warning (model 222 as of 01.06.2017, model 217 as of 01.12.2017, except code 460 (Canada version))
Standing lamp actuation function sequence
Turning the exterior lights switch (S1) to the standing lights position requests actuation of the standing lights.
The front SAM control unit directly reads in the status of the exterior lights switch and transmits the "Standing lights ON" request to the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) via the interior CAN and to the left headlamp control unit (E1n9) and right headlamp control unit (E2n9) via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and peripherals CAN (CAN PER).
On vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the front SAM control unit also sends the "Standing lights ON" request via interior CAN to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1).
At the same time, the front SAM control unit transmits the "Switch on standing light indicator lamp" request via the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster (A1), which then switches on the standing light indicator lamp.
After locking the vehicle (up to 31.05.2014) or if the status of circuit 15 is OFF (as of 01.06.2014), the standing lights indicator is deactivated after a specified time even if the function is still active.
The left headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left front lamp unit (E1)
- Left front side marker lamp (E1e6) (with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Left parking light, standing light and daytime running light (E1e13) (model 217, model 222 without code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), model 222 up to 31.05.2017 with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
- Left position light and daytime running light (E1e27) (model 222 as of 01.06.2017 with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))
The right headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Right front lamp unit (E2)
- Right front side marker lamp (E2e6) (with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Right parking light, standing light and daytime running light (E2e13) (model 217, model 222 without code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), model 222 up to 31.05.2017 with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))

In vehicles without code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), the following components are actuated directly by the front SAM control unit:
- Left front lamp unit
- Left front side marker light (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
- Right front lamp unit
- Right front side marker light (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left rear lamp unit (E3)
- Left rear side marker light (E3e6) (in model 222 up to 31.05.2017 or model 217 as of 01.12.2017, with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Left taillight and brake light (E3e17) (in model 222)
- Left taillight (E3e18)
- Inner left rear lamp unit (E3/1) (in model 217)
- Inner left taillight (E3/1e2),
- Right rear lamp unit (E4)
- Right rear side marker light (E4e6) (in model 222 up to 31.05.2017 or model 217 as of 01.12.2017, with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Right taillight and brake light (E4e17) (in model 222)
- Right taillight (E4e18)
- Inner right rear lamp unit (E4/1) (in model 217)
- Inner right taillight (E4/1e2)
- Left license plate lamp (E19/1)
- Right license plate lamp (E19/2)
In model 222 as of 01.06.2017 and model 217 as of 01.12.2017, the tail lights and license plate lamps are dimmed when switched on and off.
On vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the trailer recognition control unit actuates the following components of the exterior lights on the trailer via the trailer socket (X58):
- Taillights
- License plate lights
If the interior CAN is in "bus idle", the standing lights actuation is stored in all the control units involved until deactivation is requested by the front SAM control unit.
Additional function requirements for standing lights warning
- Standing lights ON
- Driver door OPEN
- Circuit 15R OFF
Function sequence for standing light warning
The logic for requesting the standing lights warning function is stored in the front SAM control unit.
The left front door control unit (N69/1) sends the status of the driver door (open or closed) and the electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit receives this information, uses it as a basis to generate a request to issue the standing light warning function, and sends this via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster then actuates the instrument cluster speaker (H4/61) directly. The message "Switch off lights" is shown on the instrument cluster.
Additional function requirements for parking lights actuation
- Circuit 15R OFF
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit via the interior CAN.
Parking lights actuation function sequence
By turning the exterior lights switch to the left parking lights position or the right parking lights position, the parking lights actuation is requested for the corresponding side of vehicle.
The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the exterior lights switch directly and sends the "Parking lights ON" request via interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit and via interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and periphery CAN to the left headlamp control unit and to the right headlamp control unit.
On vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch), the front SAM control unit also sends the "Parking lights ON" request via interior CAN to the trailer recognition control unit.
Left parking light:
The left headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left front lamp unit
- Front left side marker lamp (with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Left parking light, standing light and daytime running light (model 217, model 222 without code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), model 222 up to 31.05.2017 with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp))

In vehicles without code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), the front SAM control unit actuates the left front side marker lamp (with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version) in the left front lamp unit directly.
The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left rear lamp unit I
- Left rear side marker light (in model 222 up to 31.05.2017 or 11 model 217 as of 01.12.2017, with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Left taillight and brake light (in model 222)
- Left taillamp
- Inner left rear lamp unit (in model 217)
- Left inside taillight
In model 222 as of 01.06.2017 and model 217 as of 01.12.2017, the tail lights are dimmed when switched on and off.
The trailer recognition control unit (with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch)) actuates the left taillight on the trailer via the trailer socket.
Right parking light:
The right headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Right front lamp unit
- Right front side marker lamp (with code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))

In vehicles without code 640 (Dynamic SAE right-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) and without code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), the front SAM control unit actuates the right front side marker lamp (with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version)) in the right front lamp unit directly.
The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Right rear lamp unit
- Right rear side marker light (in model 222 up to 31.05.2017 or model 217 as of 01.12.2017, with code 460 (Canada version) or code 494 (USA version))
- Right taillight and brake light (in model 222)
- Right taillamp
- Inner right rear lamp unit (in model 217)
- Right inside taillight
In model 222 as of 01.06.2017 and model 217 as of 01.12.2017, the tail lights are dimmed when switched on and off.

Additional function requirements for driving light warning (model 222 as of 01.06.2017, model 217 as of 01.12.2017, except code 460 (Canada version))
- Exterior lights switch in standing lights position or parking lights position
- Rain/light sensor with additional functions (B38/2) detects darkness
- Vehicle speed v > 15 km/h

The logic for requesting the driving lights warning function is stored in the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the exterior lights switch directly.
The light sensor (B38/2b2) in the rain/light sensor with additional functions detects the ambient brightness. The rain/light sensor with additional functions reads in the signals of the light sensor directly, evaluates them and transmits the "Low beams ON" request via the rain/light sensor LIN (LIN B16) to the front SAM control unit when it is dark.
The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) transmits the vehicle speed via the chassis FlexRay (flex E), the electronic ignition lock control unit and the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit receives this information, uses it to generate the request to issue the driving lights warning function, and it transmits the "Warning tone ON" and "Instrument cluster message ON" requests via the interior CAN, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.
The instrument cluster then actuates the instrument cluster speaker directly. "Switch on driving lights" message appears on the instrument cluster.
