Ambient Illumination, Function - GF82.10-P-2014LF

Model 217, 222 

Function requirements, general 

IMPORTANT The COMAND controller unit (model 217 up to 30.11.2017, model 222 up to 31.05.2017) or the head unit (model 217 as of 01.12.2017, model 222 as of 01.06.2017) transmits the status of the "Surround lighting" function and the switch-off delay time to the front SAM control unit (N10/6) via the user interface CAN (CAN HMI), electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and interior CAN (CAN B).

The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the exterior lights switch directly.

The rain/light sensor with additional functions reads in the signals of the light sensor directly and sends information on the ambient brightness (dimness stage) via rain/light sensor LIN (LIN B16) to the front SAM control unit.

Ambient illumination, general 

The ambient illumination is used for safely leaving and finding the vehicle in darkness.

The following light functions are activated here:

Standing/parking lights actuation

IMPORTANT Standing/parking lights actuation is performed more intensely (brighter) during the ambient illumination.

IMPORTANT Model 222 as of model year 2018

Staging of the lighting takes place at the left taillight and brake light (E3e17) and at the left taillight (E3e18), as well as at the right taillight and brake light (E4e17) and at the right taillight (E4e18). Here, the LEDs in the lights are switched on in time-delayed fashion from top to bottom and in reverse when switching off. The duration of the staging lasts approx. t = 3 s. The staging only takes place when the vehicle is at a standstill and with circuit 15 OFF. In the event of failure of individual system components for the vehicle's rear lights, no staging will take place.

IMPORTANT Model 217 as of model year 2018

A lighting event takes place on the left tail light and inner left tail light (E3/1e2) as well as on the right tail light and inner right tail light (E4/1e2). Here, on each side, the entire surface of both lights is switched on from inside to outside at staggered intervals and switched off in the reverse order. The duration of the staging lasts approx. t = 3 s. The staging only takes place when the vehicle is at a standstill and with circuit 15 OFF. In the event of failure of individual system components for the vehicle's rear lights, no staging will take place.

The ambient illumination function encompasses the following partial functions:

IMPORTANT The headlamp switch-off delay and locator lighting functions run in parallel if necessary. An active headlamp switch-off delay (SWA) function is not terminated by a requested AFB function and vice versa.

Function sequence for headlamp switch-off delay (SWA) 

IMPORTANT The duration of the headlamp switch-off delay (switch-off delay time) can be set in 15 second steps from t = 0 to 60 s in the COMAND controller unit (model 217 up to 30.11.2017, model 222 up to 31.05.2017) or in the head unit (model 217 as of 01.12.2017, model 222 as of 01.06.2017).

The headlamp switch-off delay function is activated after switching off the engine by the driver (change from circuit 15 ON status to circuit 15R ON) for t = 60 s. The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the front SAM control unit via interior CAN.

The front SAM control unit then activates the standing/parking lights actuation. Furthermore, the front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the ambient illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:

In ECE vehicles model 222 as of 01.06.2017 with code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), the front SAM control unit also transmits the request to switch on the surround lighting via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and peripherals CAN (CAN PER) to the following control units:

The left front door control unit actuates the left outside mirror ambient lamp and the left front door outer door handle illumination.

The right front door control unit actuates the right outside mirror ambient lamp and the right front door outer door handle illumination.

The left rear door control unit actuates the left rear door outer door handle illumination.

The right rear door control unit actuates the right rear door outer door handle illumination.

The left headlamp control unit actuates the left front ambient light.

The right headlamp control unit actuates the right front ambient light.

During the OFF delay time, after lock confirmation flashing, the ambient lights in the front lamp units illuminate in blue for t = 2 s and then turn white.

Opening a vehicle door or the trunk lid re-activates the function for t = 60 s. When all vehicle doors and the trunk lid are closed again, the function is re-activated, but in this case for the set switch-off delay time.

IMPORTANT The left front door control unit and the right front door control unit send the status of the front doors via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit. The status of the rear doors is sent by the left rear door control unit and the right rear door control unit and the status of the trunk lid is sent by the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The active SWA is interrupted by switching on circuit 15 or by triggering an anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) alarm (with CODE 551 (Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))).

Function sequence for AFB 

When unlocking the vehicle, the ambient illumination is switched on for a period of t = 40 s (time for the automatic relocking).

The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the status of the central locking via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit then activates the standing/parking lights actuation. Furthermore, the front SAM control unit sends the request to switch on the ambient illumination via interior CAN to the following control units:

In ECE vehicles model 222 as of 01.06.2017 with code 641 (Dynamic left-hand traffic LED headlamp) or code 642 (Dynamic right-hand traffic LED headlamp), the front SAM control unit also transmits the request to switch on the surround lighting via the interior CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit and peripherals CAN to the following control units:

The left front door control unit actuates the left outside mirror ambient lamp and the left front door outer door handle illumination.

The right front door control unit actuates the right outside mirror ambient lamp and the right front door outer door handle illumination.

The left rear door control unit actuates the left rear door outer door handle illumination.

The right rear door control unit actuates the right rear door outer door handle illumination.

The left headlamp control unit actuates the left front ambient light.

The right headlamp control unit actuates the right front ambient light.

The ambient lights in the front lamp units light up in blue for t = 2 s and then turn white.

IMPORTANT If an engine start is detected within t = 40 s, a change is made from the locator lighting function to the auto on/off driving lights function.
