REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).    
2 Remove cover above brake fluid expansion reservoir.    
3 Clean area around cap on brake fluid expansion reservoir. Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
4 Unscrew cap on brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid. IMPORTANT This prevents the expansion reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back.  
5 Remove corresponding wheel and tire assembly.   AR40.10-P-1102A
6 Disconnect right front brake wear sensor electrical connector (S10/2x1) for right front brake wear sensor (S10/2). If the brake pads (3) on the right side of the vehicle are removed.  
7 Remove screw (6) and remove tie bar (7). If a tie bar (7) is present.

8 Knock out retaining pins (1) using punch and remove retaining spring (2). INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Drive in retaining pins (1) up to the end stop.
Check retaining spring (2) is correctly seated.
 
9 Pull brake pads (3) out of brake caliper (4). INSTALLATION NOTESInstallation:  Do not apply brake paste or lubricants to the brake pads (3) and brake calipers (4).
Malfunctions may occur otherwise.
IMPORTANT Pry out seized brake linings (3) using a lever.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only install brake pads (3) approved by Mercedes-Benz as a set. Make sure that the brake pads (3) are installed at the correct position.

10 Check brake pads (3).    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 217 except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) AP42.10-P-4252C
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 222 except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) except code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version) If wear or damage is detected,

Replace brake pads (3).

11 Check brake disks (5).    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 217 except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) AP42.10-P-4258C
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 222 except code B07 (AMG - ceramic brake system) except code Z07 (B7 armoring on special protection version) If wear or damage is detected,

replace brake disks (5).

12 Check brake caliper (4) and dust boots of brake pistons. If a leakage or any damage is detected,

Replace brake caliper (4).

13 Press back brake piston using pusher tool. IMPORTANT Secure remaining brake pistons to prevent them slipping out.

If one or more brake pistons are sluggish.

Replace brake caliper (4).

CLEAN Clean     
14 Clean contact surfaces of brake pads (3) at brake caliper (4). NOTES Do not use sharp-edged or pointed objects. Otherwise damage will occur to the dust boots  
    Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
15 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of backing plate of brakepad (3). If the brake pads (3) are replaced or the right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) is replaced.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the defective right front brake wear sensor (S10/2).
 
16 Install in the reverse order.    
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A 
17 Depress brake pedal several times until the brake pads (3) lie against the brake disks (5). IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
18 Check fluid level in expansion reservoir for brake fluid.

19 Perform brake test on test stand.
