Function requirements, general 

Automatic interior lights control in general 

The automatic interior lights control actuates all the components of the interior illumination (IBL). The appropriate requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The automatic interior lights control function encompasses the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirement for locator lighting 

IMPORTANT The overhead control panel (OCP) control unit reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic function button directly and transmits this via the roof LIN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Locator lighting function sequence 

When unlocking the vehicle via radio, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the locator lighting.

The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit transmits the status of the central locking (CL) via the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then transmits the request to switch on the IBL via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel (OCP) control unit.

The overhead control panel (OCP) control unit then actuates the following components directly:

IMPORTANT If the ambient illumination function is activated through the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit, it automatically switches itself on through the central locking when the vehicle is unlocked. This leads to the fact that the search and symbol illumination is switched on. The symbol and ambiance illumination function is described in the separate "Symbol and ambiance illumination, function" document.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit also actuates the request to switch on the following components directly:

When the central locking is unlocked, all lamps are switched off after expiration of t = 40 s or immediately if the vehicle is locked again within t = 3 s after unlocking it.

Additional function requirement for orientation lighting 

IMPORTANT The overhead control panel (OCP) control unit reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic function button directly and transmits this via the roof LIN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Function sequence for orientation lighting 

With the switching off of circuit 15C, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the orientation lighting.

The circuit 15 status is transmitted by the electronic ignition lock unit (EZS) control unit via the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit. The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit then transmits the request to switch on the IBL via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel (OCP) control unit.

When the vehicle doors are closed, all lights that are switched on are switched off once the OFF delay time has expired.

Model 447.8, 448.8 

The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the radio (Audio/COMAND). The radio (Audio/COMAND) transmits the relevant selection via the user interface CAN, the gateway for user interface CAN and the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Model 447.6/7, 448.7 

The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit. The respective selection is sent by the instrument cluster (IC [KI]) control unit via interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Additional function requirements for warning and exit illumination 

IMPORTANT The overhead control panel (OCP) control unit reads in the status of the interior lamp automatic function button directly and transmits this via the roof LIN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Function sequence for warning and exit illumination 

When a vehicle door is opened, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the warning and exit illumination.

The front door control units transmit the status of the front doors (open or closed) to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit via the interior CAN.

The sliding door control units send the status of the sliding doors (open or closed) (with CODE T55 (Electrical actuation for right sliding door) or with CODE T56 (Electrical actuation for left sliding door)) (model 447.7/8, 448.8) via interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit receives the status of the left sliding door (open or closed) (with CODE T19 (Left sliding door) and without CODE T56 (Electrical actuation for left sliding door)) from the mechanical left sliding door central locking actuator.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit receives the status of the right sliding door (open or closed) (without CODE T55 (Electric operation for right sliding door)) from the mechanical right sliding door central locking actuator.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit evaluates all incoming information and transmits the request to switch on the IBL via the roof LIN to the overhead control panel (OCP) control unit.

The overhead control panel (OCP) control unit actuates the following components directly:

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit also transmits the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination to the following control units:

Depending on which vehicle doors were opened, the following components of the warning and exit illumination are actuated:

Model 447.8, 448.8 

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit also actuates the following entrance illumination components directly in vehicles with CODE LC1 (Ambiance illumination):

The illuminated door sill moldings are actuated with different maximum values depending on the ambient brightness. The ambient brightness is detected by the light sensor. The humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor (with CODE HH9 (Semi-automatically controlled air conditioning, TEMPMATIC)) or the humidity sensor/light sensor/rain sensor/sun sensor (with CODE HH4 (THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control)) directly reads in the signals from the light sensor, evaluates them and sends information on the ambient brightness (twilight level) via roof LIN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with "circuit 15 OFF" all of the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min when a vehicle door is opened and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.

Additional function requirement for trunk illumination 

IMPORTANT A stationary vehicle is defined via the vehicle speed. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit transmits the vehicle speed via the chassis CAN, the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit and the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Function sequence for trunk illumination 

When the liftgate is opened, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the trunk illumination.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit receives the status of the liftgate (open or closed) (without CODE W68 (EASY-PACK liftgate) and without CODE T55 (Electrical actuation for right sliding door)) from the liftgate opening assist.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit receives the status of the liftgate (open or closed) (with CODE T55 (Electrical actuation for right sliding door) and with or without CODE W68 (EASY-PACK liftgate)) from the right sliding door control unit (E-LSTR).

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit actuates the following components directly:

After closing the liftgate all switched-on lights are switched off again.

IMPORTANT To preserve the on-board electrical system battery, all lights that are on when the liftgate is opened and "circuit 15 OFF" are switched off after t = 5 minutes.

Function sequence for IBL with ATA alarm (with CODE FZ5 (Anti-theft alarm system) or with CODE FY1 (Theft protection package)) 

Immediately after triggering an ATA alarm, the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the following functions of the IBL:

IMPORTANT Detailed information on triggering an ATA [EDW] alarm is described in the separate "Function description for theft protection and locking" function description.

Additional function requirement for IBL after an accident 

IMPORTANT A stationary vehicle is defined via the vehicle speed. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) control unit transmits the vehicle speed via the chassis CAN, the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit and the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

Function sequence for IBL after accident 

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit activates the IBL after an accident with airbag deployment.

Actuation of the IBL provides better orientation for the occupants and the first aiders after an accident.

If the supplemental restraint system (SRS) control unit detects an accident, it transmits the crash signal via the chassis CAN, the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit and the interior CAN to the signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit also detects a crash by evaluating the signals of the integrated crash sensor.

The signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) control unit evaluates all incoming information and activates the following functions of the IBL:
