Internet connection, general
Depending on equipment, the Internet connection can be established via the head unit, the HERMES control unit (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or code 362 (HERMES LTE)) or the telephone control unit (with code 380 (Car telephony package)). In vehicles with code 360 (HERMES UMTS), code 362 (HERMES LTE) and with code 380 (Car telephony package), the head unit software switches the Internet connection into the mobile telephone network via either the HERMES control unit or the telephone control unit. Operation is through both the head unit and the Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)) with the following components:
- Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad))
- Touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad))
- Head unit multifunction steering wheel button group
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
- Remote control (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment system))

When operated from the rear, the contents are shown on the left rear display or on the right rear display, or otherwise on the Audio/COMAND display.
The head unit receives the signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)) or the touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only) or with code 448 (Touchpad)) via the telematics CAN.

Head unit
On operation via the voice control system, the driver hands-free system microphone converts the voice commands into electrical signals and forwards them to the head unit.
The remote control (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)) sends Kleer® radio signals to the Kleer® radio interface of the left rear display or the right rear display, and forwards them as follows:

When operated from the rear (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)), the contents are shown on the left rear display or on the right rear display. The head unit transmits the signals via MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit forwards the signals via HSVL lines to the left rear display or the right rear display.
The head unit generates the screen display and forwards it via an HSVL line to the Audio/COMAND display.
The control logics and the design of the controls are similar in all cases. Internet use is demonstrated below on the head unit by way of an example through operation on the Audio/COMAND control panel. The Internet connection function is divided into the following subfunctions:
- Internet access (dial-in) via the head unit with code 362 (HERMES LTE) or with code 360 (HERMES UMTS)
- Internet access (dial-in) via the head unit except code 362 (HERMES LTE) or code 360 (HERMES UMTS)
- Internet usage
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-up) via the head unit with code 362 (HERMES LTE) or with code 360 (HERMES UMTS)
- The "Internet access" service is authorized and the authorized communications module of the HERMES control unit is configured with the telephone number of the service provider in question.
- The vehicle owner is registered and authorized at the Service Center.
- No prioritized service (emergency call (manual or automatic), MB information call, breakdown assistance) is activated.
Internet access (dial-in) via the head unit with code 362 (HERMES LTE) or with code 360 (HERMES UMTS)
The function is activated by calling up the menu on the Audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed e.g. by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)). Direct access to the browser is also possible via the "Back" button on the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)).
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server for protected data traffic in order to connect to the Internet. Due to the encrypted connection, the user is only generally identifiable as a user of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway when surfing the net and using services, and cannot be located in the network via his activities.
If the head unit is used as a hotspot or if the IP-Radio service is activated, the data traffic is not processed through the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway.
When operated from the rear passenger compartment using the remote control (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)), the contents are shown on the left rear display or the right rear display. For Internet access in the rear, received Internet signals are transmitted via the following route by the HERMES control unit via the head unit hot spot:

The HERMES control unit uses transmission and reception diversity via two antenna inputs for transmitting and receiving.
Depending on the requests from the head unit, the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway exchanges data with the World Wide Web and service providers over the Internet. The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway transmits the data received the opposite way to the head unit.
Activating a manual or automatic emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB information call interrupts the Internet connection.
Additional function requirements for Internet access (dial-in) via the head unit except code 360 (HERMES UMTS), code 362 (HERMES LTE)
- Basic telephony:
- A mobile phone is connected over the Bluetooth® to the head unit and supports Bluetooth® Profile Personal Area Network (PAN) or Dial-up Networking (DUN).
- If the mobile phone supports the Personal Area Network (PAN) profile, Internet sharing must be activated.
- Telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package):
- A SIM card (Subscriber Identification Module) with data-capable mobile phone contract is inserted in the telephone control unit.
- A mobile phone is connected to the telephone control unit via Bluetooth®, and supports the Bluetooth® Dial-up Networking (DUN) profile.
- The mobile telephone network provider allows the mobile phone to be used for data services.

Depending on how the mobile phone is lying on the mobile phone cradle control unit or the rear mobile phone cradle control unit, its reception is improved by the connected antenna connection.

The function is activated by calling up the menu on the Audio/COMAND display. It is also possible to directly access the browser via the "Back" button. The mobile telephone network provider must first be selected on the head unit in the case of mobile phones that support the DUN profile. In vehicles with code 380 (Car telephony package), the dial-in data are transferred automatically. The head unit then uses a pop-up window to ask whether the dial-in data are correct. When using mobile phones that support the PAN profile, the dial-up data of the mobile telephone network provider entered into the mobile phone are used.
The "System" menu on the Audio/COMAND display is selected by turning the Audio/COMAND controller. The selection is confirmed e.g. by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)).
The mobile telephone network provider can either be selected from the country-specific lists or, if the mobile telephone network provider cannot be found in the list, added using "New Provider". Further access information is required (for example, on the tariff) that can be obtained from the mobile telephone network provider. As soon as the data is available, the connection to the Internet is set up.
The Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is always used as the server for protected data traffic in order to connect to the Internet. Fees: Internet access and services are free from Mercedes-Benz. However, fees must be paid to the mobile telephone network provider in accordance with the respective mobile phone contract. Display options and the option of separating the connection via the "System" menu make cost management easier in time as well as data volume contracts.
When operated from the rear passenger compartment using the remote control (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)), the contents are shown on the left rear display or the right rear display. For Internet access in the rear passenger compartment, Internet signals are forwarded either via Bluetooth® by the mobile phone (Basic telephony) or via WLAN by the telephone control unit (with code 380 (Car telephony package)) as follows:

On establishment of a connection via telephony with code 380 (Car telephony package), the telephone control unit transmits the data into the mobile telephone network via the following route:

With basic telephony, the head unit sends the signals over the Bluetooth® antenna to the mobile phone, which establishes the connection to the mobile telephone network.
To achieve better reception in vehicles with code 899 (Multifunction telephony) or with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear), the mobile phone must be placed on the mobile phone cradle control unit (with code 899 (Multifunction telephony)) or the rear mobile phone cradle control unit (with code 856 (Business telephony in the rear)).
On establishment of a connection via telephony with code 899 (Multifunction telephony), the head unit transmits the data into the mobile telephone network via Bluetooth®:

Multiple use of the mobile phone: As a matter of principle, mobile phones that support the Internet connection function can be used to process several functions in parallel. It is e.g. possible to make a telephone call when connected to the Internet, although this is dependent on the quality of the respective network. If the network connection is too weak, the Internet connection is merely maintained while the telephone call is being made.
Internet usage
The services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway are supplementary to the navigation system and can be used while driving. Free surfing is only possible if the vehicle is stationary. The head unit receives the speed signal from the instrument cluster over the user-interface CAN.
Audio and video signals from the Internet can also be played back. The head unit outputs the audio signals from the Internet via the speaker system or, in vehicles with code 810 (Sound system), it sends them via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit or with code 811 (Advanced Sound System) via MOST to the Advanced sound system amplifier control unit. The video signals (not Flash) are shown on the Audio/COMAND display.
When activated from the rear passenger compartment (with code 864 (Rear Seat Entertainment System)) the head unit forwards the audio and video signals from the Internet over MOST to the Rear Seat Entertainment System controller unit. The Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit transmits the video signals for visualization via an HSVL line to the left rear display or the right rear display and the audio signals via an integrated Kleer® radio interface to the respective radio frequency headphones. With cabled headphones, the Rear Seat Entertainment system controller unit forwards the audio signals via the HSVL line to the headphones jack in the respective rear display.
In vehicles except code 494 (USA version) and code 498 (Japan version), cost settlement differs according to data volume consumption. Data-intensive services such as, e.g. Internet radio or Internet use via the In-Car hot spot generate the use of an irregular data volume each month, necessitating cost settlement through a data contract with the mobile telephone network provider. A simple contract is sufficient for services in which the data volume is the same each month, e.g. downloading map data.
The Internet can be used in the vehicle in the following ways:
- Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services
- Unrestricted surfing
Use of Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway services
By turning the Audio/COMAND controller, the menu with the online services of the Mercedes-Benz Internet and Application Gateway is selected on the Audio/COMAND display. The selection is confirmed e.g. by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller on the Audio/COMAND control panel (with code 448 (Touchpad)).
The individual services and the options for the services can now be actuated in the same way using the Audio/COMAND control panel. The method of operation and the screen displays have been adapted to the general operation of the head unit as have the design of the displays on the Audio/COMAND display so that operation is essentially intuitive.
The following services, among others, can be used:
- Search for points of interest
- Weather
- Load points of interest or routes (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE))
- Load points of interest or routes (except code 360 (HERMES UMTS), code 362 (HERMES LTE))
Additional services are available or can be retrofitted.
Search for points of interest
Search terms can be selected from lists or entered on the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. Points of interest can be searched for as a search term at the current location, navigation destination, arbitrary location (free entry) or along the route.
The area that is being searched is defined under "Options". The search results appear in the form of a list. Search results can be stored in the address book or under "Personal POIs" on the Secure Digital (SD) card in the SD card slot of the head unit. If a list entry contains a telephone number, a telephone connection can be set up. A selected search result can be transferred to the navigation system, and in this case the head unit switches to the navigation menu.
Weather
Weather information is displayed either as a weather data table or as a weather map.
In the basic setting the current weather data for the current location of the vehicle and forecasts for the next few hours are displayed.
However, different time periods and locations can be selected, such as information about the weather along the route or at the destination. In addition, city names or ZIP codes can be entered with the character bar on the audio/COMAND display. The most up-to-date measurements and forecasts are always displayed. The topicality of the data depends on the relationship between the time of the query and the time of the last measurement.
Weather data are sent from the weather station nearest to the entered location. It can take a while to transfer and display the respective data, particularly if maps are being displayed or with a weak network connection.

- An SD card is located in the SD card slot of the head unit.
- A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle by the Service Center.
Special destinations or routes that have been sent to the vehicle over the Internet (e.g. via Google Maps) are also sent to the vehicle by way of the Service Center.
Load points of interest or routes (with code 360 (HERMES UMTS) or with code 362 (HERMES LTE))

If circuit 15 is OFF, the HERMES control unit stores the data in an integrated buffer.
If the capacity of the buffer is exceeded, the oldest POIs or routes are overwritten.
With circuit 15 ON, the HERMES control unit transmits the map data via the following route:

The reception of information is displayed by the head unit by means of a pop-up window on the Audio/COMAND display. Using the "Import" menu item, the special destinations or routes are copied from the buffer to the navigation system or the address book of the head unit.
Only then are the POIs and routes transmitted to the vehicle permanently available in the vehicle.
Map data can be sent by the Service Center as part of an emergency call, breakdown assistance or an MB-Info call. In contrast to the POIs, routes are only transferred after the voice command connection has been terminated.
Due to the limited capacity of the buffer, transmitted POIs/routes are available for downloading only for a limited period of time (approx. 7 days), and only a limited number of POIs/routes can be made available for download within the same time period.
If the point of interest or route is only needed immediately and not permanently, the navigation can be started directly without the point of interest or route being stored permanently. This function is also available without an SD card.
Additional function requirements for loading points of interest or routes (except code 360 (HERMES UMTS), code 362 (HERMES LTE))
- An SD card is located in the SD card slot of the head unit.
- A POI or route has been sent to the vehicle using Google Maps.
Points of interest that have been found on the Internet via Google Maps or routes that have been planned using Google Maps can be transmitted via Google Maps to the vehicle.
Load points of interest or routes (except code 360 (HERMES UMTS), code 362 (HERMES LTE))
The "Load special destinations and routes" service lists the special destinations and routes that have been sent to the vehicle and makes it possible to transfer them from the clipboard to the navigation system and the address book of the head unit using the "Import" menu item. Points of interest and routes that are transmitted via Google Maps are only permanently available in the vehicle if they have been imported into the navigation system or the head unit address book with the "Load points of interest or routes" service via "Import".
Points of interests can be loaded but no routes. The special destinations must always be taken from the head unit address book and selected from there as the navigation destination.
If more POIs and routes are sent than can be stored in the clipboard, the oldest POIs and routes are overwritten.

Unrestricted surfing
In order to connect to the Internet, either a URL must be entered or a page that is stored under "Favorites" must be selected.
In order to navigate on the page, you can either move the cursor using the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel as though you were using a mouse, or jump from one selectable object (e.g. link) to the next on the current page by turning the Audio/COMAND controller (this highlights the object).
A marked link is opened by pressing the Audio/COMAND controller of the Audio/COMAND control panel vertically downwards. The "back" button opens the context menu. When jumping to a text entry field, the character toolbar on the audio/COMAND display can be used to enter text.
Surfing with the mobile browser is subject to the following technical restrictions:
- Playback of videos (HTML5)
- No downloads
The Internet browser is not able to play back flash videos.
