DANGER Risk of fire  /risk of explosion due to short circuit and escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of (burn) injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte/mist, short circuit and arcing. Risk of poisoning  caused by swallowing battery electrolyte or absorption of lead through the skin or body orifices. Risk of death  due to voltage U >= 30 V AC and U >= 60 V DC. No fires, sparks, open flames, or smoking.
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing, and glasses. Pour battery acid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Commission DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1). When replacing DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
2 Remove partition trim in trunk.   AR68.30-P-4600LF
3 Detach ground line of on-board electrical system battery. IMPORTANT The 48 V on-board electrical system is automatically disengaged from the power supply 10 s, at the latest, after disconnecting the ground line (12 V on-board electrical system). AR54.10-P-0003LF 
4 Unscrew screws (1) and remove retaining frame (2). Model 222
with code 282 (Ski and snowboard bag)

5 Release and detach degassing pipe (9).   AR09.41-P-1311-01AL
6 Release electrical wiring harnesses (10) from threaded pin (11) and place to one side.    
7 Remove nut (12).    
8 Remove screws (14).    
9 Pull battery frame (15) together with on-board electrical system battery for 48 V on-board electrical system (G1/3) slightly backward.    
10 Disconnect electrical connector (3).    
11 Remove nuts (4).    
12 Remove electric lines (5) from DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).    
13 Place tensioning strap (13) to one side.    
14 Remove bolts (6).    
15 Remove DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) from 48 V on-board electrical system battery (G1/3). NOTES Detach the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) vertically from the 48 V on-board electrical system battery (G1/3).
Otherwise the contact pin (16) will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Make sure that the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) is not tilted.
The DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) is bonded to the 48 V on-board electrical system battery (G1/3) by means of the thermal compound applied between the two components.
 
16 Check contact pin (16) and corresponding contact sleeve in DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) for damage. If damage is found,

replace corresponding components.
Remove/install battery of 48 V on-board electrical system
AR54.10-P-0022LFM 
17 Clean contact surface of 48 V battery (G1/3) thoroughly. IMPORTANT Use a commercially available plastic spatula for cleaning.
Do not damage the contact surface of the 48 V on-board electrical system battery (G1/3).
 
18 Clean contact surface of DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) thoroughly. When reusing the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).
IMPORTANT Use a commercially available plastic spatula for cleaning.
Do not damage the contact surface of the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).
 
19 Check thread (7) for damage and soiling. If damage or soiling is present:

Recut thread (7) concerned.
 
20 Check seal (8) for damage. If damage is found,

Install new seal (8).
 
INSTALLING Install     
21 Apply thermal compound to DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1). IMPORTANT The thermal compound must be processed with a period of 1 h.
IMPORTANT To apply the thermal compound, use a commercially available double cartridge gun 50 ml.

    Thermal compound *BR00.45-Z-1002-14A 
22 Position DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) on 48 V battery (G1/3) and press on evenly. NOTES Position the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) vertically on the 48 V on-board electrical system battery (G1/3).
Otherwise the contact pin (16) will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Apply the pressing-on force to the outer edges of the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) only.
Make sure that the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1) is not tilted.
Avoid any lateral forces.
 
23 Screw in bolts (6). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, DC/DC converter control unit to on-board electrical system battery (48V) *BA54.10-P-1011-01J 
24 Position tensioning strap (13) over DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).    
25 Tighten nut (12) lightly by hand.    
26 Position electric lines (5) on contact pins at DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).    
27 Screw on nuts (4). IMPORTANT Replace nuts (4).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, positive line/ground line to DC/DC converter control unit/on-board electrical system battery (48V) *BA54.10-P-1012-01J 
28 Connect electrical connector (3).    
29 Move battery frame (15) together with on-board electrical system battery for 48 V on-board electrical system (G1/3) into installation position.    
30 Screw in bolts (14). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, battery frame to body *BA54.10-P-1001-01J 
31 Tighten nut (12). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, tensioning strap to battery frame *BA54.10-P-1002-01J 
32 Secure electrical wiring harness (10) at threaded pin (11).    
33 Attach degassing pipe (9) and lock.   AR09.41-P-1311-01AL
34 Position retaining frame (2) and screw in screws (1). Model 222

35 Connect ground line of on-board electrical system battery.   AR54.10-P-0003LF 
36 Install partition trim in trunk.   AR68.30-P-4600LF
