Remove/Install Rack-And-Pinion Steering - AR46.20-P-0600MFA

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Switch off ignition and store transmitter key outside of transmitter range (min. 2 m).    
2 Disconnect steering coupling.   AR46.10-P-8000-01MFA

5 Detach lower transverse control arm from steering knuckle at left and right.   AR33.20-P-0510MFA

7 Detach torsion bar linkage from torsion bar at left and right.   AR32.35-P-3330MFA
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, torsion bar linkage to suspension strut/stabilizer bar *BA32.35-P-1002-02A 
8 Remove fender liners in front fenders.   AR88.10-P-1301MFA
9 Release and disconnect electrical connector at left front body acceleration sensor (B24/3) or right front body acceleration sensor (B24/4) and remove electrical wiring harness from front axle carrier (4). Model 118, 177, 247

10 Release and disconnect electrical connector from left front level sensor (B22/8) or right front level sensor (B22/9) and remove electrical wiring harness from front axle carrier (4). Model 118, 177, 247

11 Remove expansion rivets (18). SPECIAL TOOL Dismantling tool Fig 4
12 Unscrew screws (19) and remove front support (12) with front wheel spoilers (13).    
13 Detach bracket (22) of exhaust system from front axle carrier (4). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 654

14.1 Remove control unit of temperature sensor upstream of gasoline particulate filter (B163/4) from holder on front axle carrier (4) and - with the temperature sensor connected to the vehicle - secure it free of strain against falling down. Model 177, 247 with engine 260, 282

NOTES
Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension. This will result in damage to the lines which may impair their functional capability.
IMPORTANT The temperature sensor upstream of the gasoline particulate filter (B163/4) remains in the exhaust system and is permanently connected to the control unit.

14.2 Detach control unit of NOx sensor downstream of SCR catalytic converter (N37/8) from bracket on front axle carrier (4) and secure on vehicle free of tension to prevent it falling with line connected. Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 608
NOTES
Do not crush or kink or subject lines to tension. This will result in damage to the lines which may impair their functional capability.
IMPORTANT The NOx sensor downstream of the SCR catalytic converter (N37/8b1) remains in the exhaust system and is permanently connected to the control unit of the NOx sensor downstream of the SCR catalytic converter (N37/8).

15 Release and disconnect electrical connectors (21) at rack-and-pinion steering (10).    
16 Unclip electrical line of electrical connectors (21) from heat shield (17).    
17 Remove nuts (11).    
18 Remove bracket from right connecting carrier. Model 118, 177 with engine 139

19 Remove screws (7, 16) and remove left and right connecting carriers (15) from vehicle. TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, connecting carrier to front axle carrier/radiator support *BA62.30-P-1003-02O 
20 Support front axle carrier (4) and secure to prevent it falling.   AR01.10-P-2500-01A
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 25 62 00 Lift table IMPORTANT Use lifting platform in combination with major assembly mount (universal). WS01.00-P-0264A
21 Remove longitudinal member reinforcements at left and right transverse control arm bearing. Model 118, 177 with engine 139

INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace screws of transverse control arm bearing on front axle carrier.

22 Remove lower engine stabilizer mount. Model 118, 177 with engine 139 AR22.10-P-1155MFG
    Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 260, 282 AR22.10-P-1155MFC
    Model 118, 177, 247 with engine 608, 654 AR22.10-P-1155MFE
23 Remove screws (14). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front-axle carrier to body *BA33.10-P-1001-01R 
24 Remove bolts (5). TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front-axle carrier to body *BA33.10-P-1001-01R 
25 Remove screws (8) and lower front axle carrier (4).    
REFER TO SPECIAL TOOLS 000 588 25 62 00 Lift table IMPORTANT Use lifting platform in combination with major assembly mount (universal).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace screws (8).

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, transverse control arm bearing to longitudinal member *BA33.15-P-1003-01F 
26 Remove side noise encapsulations (20). If the noise encapsulations (20) are installed.  
27 Remove nuts of screws (9) and remove rack-and-pinion steering (10) from front axle carrier (4). INSTALLATION NOTES
Position precisely. The rack-and-pinion steering (10) must not slip on the front axle carrier (4). Otherwise the elastomer bearings of the rack-and-pinion steering (10) could be trapped or damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace screws (9) and nuts. Observe information sheet for repair kit.
Fit assembly aid from repair kit onto screws (9) and insert screws (9) into front axle carrier (4) from below. Then position rack-and-pinion steering (10) on front axle carrier (4) from above.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier

28 Remove heat shield (17) from rack-and-pinion steering (10). When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (10).
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to rack-and-pinion steering

INSPECT Check     
29 Check elastomer bearings on rack-and-pinion steering (10). IMPORTANTCommercially available devices/tools 
Stationary press with suitable sleeves or pillars
Lubricant, rubber assembly 1 L
If damage or wear is present,

replace elastomer bearings.

30 Check rack-and-pinion steering (10). If an accident vehicle has been repaired.  
  Evaluating steering gear when repairing accident vehicles   AH46.20-P-9409-01A 
31 Install in the reverse order.    
  Concluding tasks     
32 Perform wheel alignment measurement.   AR40.20-P-0200MFA
