DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVING Remove     
1 Shift transmission (1) into neutral position    
2 Release parking brake    
3 Disconnect battery ground line   AR00.60-P-0100CW
4 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100CW
5 Drain coolant from low-temperature circuit   AR09.41-P-6834MNM
6 Release catalytic converters Left catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0101MNM
    Right catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0102MNM
7 Release starter wiring harness from left holder for starter wiring harness (10) at top    
8 Remove upper Bolt of left holder for starter wiring harness (10)    
9 Remove left holder for starter wiring harness (10)    
10 Remove right holder for starter wiring harness (10) from transmission (1)    
11 Remove holder from left lower engine compartment lining    
12 Remove rear propeller shaft   AR41.10-P-0050LF
13 Remove right coolant hose (3) from oil cooler (4) and seal openings using suitable stop plugs   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ

14 Remove coolant hoses (3) from coolant lines. (2) and seal openings using suitable stop plugs SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Fig 2

15 Remove oil lines   AR27.55-P-0600MNM
16 Remove oil cooler (4)   AR27.55-P-1000MNM
17 Remove holders (5, 6)    
18 Disconnect ground line of transmission (1) from underbody    
19 Remove heat shield (7)   AR27.40-P-0700-01LF
20 Release and disconnect electrical connector o electric controller unit from transmission (1)    
21 Remove holders for transmission wiring harness from transmission (1)    
22 Unclip wiring harness to transfer case on rear engine carrier    
23 Release and disconnect electrical connector from transfer case control unit Transmission 725.09 in model 217, 222 with engine 177

24 Release and disconnect electrical connector from transfer case temperature sensor Transmission 725.09 in model 217, 222 with engine 177

25 Prop up and strap down transmission (1) using major-assembly support and mounting plate

26 Remove front axle transmission propeller shaft   AR41.10-P-0070LFX
27 Unscrew Bolts (9)    
28 Screw guide pins into threaded holes of Bolts (9) SPECIAL TOOL Guide pins Fig 4
29 Lower the transmission (1) far enough to gain access to all the Bolts (8)    
30 Support front of engine between front axle carrier and engine using wooden wedge NOTES
The engine must be propped up.
Otherwise, when dismantling the transmission (1), the wet clutch will be damaged.
 
31 Remove cover from opening (arrow)    
32 Carefully pry-off wet clutch through opening (arrow) from two-mass flywheel SPECIAL TOOL Long wedge Fig 1
33 Remove starter from transmission (1), place to one side with connected lines and fix in place   AR15.30-P-7100MNM
    NOTES
Secure starter against falling down. Damage will otherwise occur.
 
34 Remove screws/ Bolts (8)    
35 Carefully pull transmission (1) with wet clutch over the guide pins to the rear and lower downwards NOTES
Secure wet clutch against falling down. Damage will otherwise occur.
IMPORTANT If the wet clutch is tilted on the two-mass flywheel it will be pulled out of the transmission (1).
If the wet clutch was pulled out of the transmission (1).

Replace sealing rings and sinuous springs.

36 Remove wet clutch When replacing the transmission (1). AR27.51-P-0300MNE
INSTALLING Install     
37 Insert wet clutch After removing the wet clutch.

38 Release wet clutch locking clip and carefully position transmission (1) with wet clutch over the guide pins on the engine    
39 Screw in screws (8) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/Bolt, transmission to engine *BA27.10-P-1001-04H 
40 Release mounting of starter and mount starter onto transmission (1)   AR15.30-P-7100MNM
41 Install cover for opening (arrow)    
42 Remove wooden wedge at front between front axle carrier and engine    
43 Remove guide pins from holes of Bolts (9) SPECIAL TOOL Guide pins Fig 4
44 Screw in Bolts (9) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/Bolt, transmission to engine *BA27.10-P-1001-04H 
45 Install front axle gear propeller shaft   AR41.10-P-0070LFX
46 Release tie-down straps from transmission (1) and remove major assembly mount and mounting plate

47 Assemble and lock electrical connector of transfer case temperature sensor Transmission 725.09 in model 217, 222 with engine 177

49 Clip wiring harness onto transfer case on rear engine carrier    
50 Mount holders for transmission wiring harness onto transmission (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
51 Assemble and lock electrical connector of electric controller unit on transmission (1)    
52 Install heat shield (7)   AR27.40-P-0700-01LF
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/Bolt, heat shield to oil pan *BA27.10-P-1009-04H 
53 Connect ground line of transmission (1) to TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 222 with engine 177 with transmission 725.0

57 Mount coolant hoses (3) onto coolant lines (2)    
58 Mount right coolant hose (3) onto oil cooler (4)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
59 Install rear propeller shaft   AR41.10-P-0050LF
60 Install holder of rear lower engine compartment lining    
61 Mount right holder for starter wiring harness (10) onto transmission (1) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
62 Position left holder for starter wiring harness (10) onto transmission (1) and tighten lower Bolt of left holder for starter wiring harness (10) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
63 Install upper Bolt of left holder for starter wiring harness (10) TORQUE SPECIFICATION M6 *BA00.10-P-1002-01A 
64 Fasten starter wiring harness onto left holder for starter wiring harness (10)    
65 Mount catalytic converters Left catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0101MNM
    Right catalytic converter AR49.20-P-0102MNM
66 Connect ground cable to battery   AR00.60-P-0100CW
67 Add coolant to low-temperature circuit   AR09.41-P-6834MNM
    IMPORTANT Only install lower engine compartment paneling after leak test.  
68 Check and correct transmission oil level   AR27.00-P-0270EWN 
69 Read out and erase fault memory

70 Perform transmission adaptation using diagnostic system When replacing or repairing the transmission (1).

WARNING Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
71 Perform engine test run and check transmission (1) for proper operation and leak tightness    
72 Install lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LF
73 Disconnect vehicle from vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100CW
