Function requirements, general

Exterior lights (ABL), general

The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.

The exterior lights encompass the following subfunction:

Further subfunctions are described in separate documents:

Function sequence for automatic shutoff of exterior lights

By switching off the exterior lights automatically, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.

IMPORTANT Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.

The low beams can be switched on because of the auto on/off driving lights, daytime running lights (only on vehicles with CODE 498 (Japan version)), or manually via the exterior lights switch. A prerequisite for this is that the status of circuit 15 is On. With circuit 15 OFF, the low beams are deactivated if the engine was switched off beforehand and the vehicle speed is v < 3 km/h.

The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights or manually via the exterior lights switch. If the driver door is opened with the circuit status circuit 15C ON or if the driver door is closed with the circuit status circuit 15C OFF, the standing light is switched off.

If the energy management system determines that the starting capability of the engine is impaired, the standing lights are switched off provided that they were activated by the parking or standing light actuation (exterior lights switch in parking or standing light position).

IMPORTANT If the "Ambient illumination" function has been activated via the head unit, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The standing lights remain on for the configured period from the point at which the last door or the liftgate was closed. The "Ambient illumination" function is described in the "Headlamp switch-off delay (SWA) function" document.
