General
The audio equipment is the center control panel for the entertainment and communications systems integrated in the vehicle.
On vehicles with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer) or with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer), the audio equipment's CD/DVD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. you can choose from up to six CDs or DVDs.
The audio equipment contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
- Audio mode, function
- Disc changer, function (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer) or with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer))
- Video mode, function
- TV mode, function (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) or with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner))

- Internet connection, function (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer) or with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)))

The displays and menu displays for the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the audio equipment (except during navigation mode with CODE 509 (Navigation box)). The display and menu display with CODE 509 (Navigation box) are not generated in the audio equipment, but rather in the navigation module (A2/30) itself and they deviate from the usual display.
The following applications can also be shown in the instrument cluster (A1):

The audio equipment acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and thereby forms the communications interface.
In vehicles except CODE 523 (MB Audio 20 radio), the audio equipment communicates with the following control units via MOST:
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with CODE 537 (Digital radio))
- Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) control unit (N87/5) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio))
- TV tuner (analog/digital) (A90/1) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner))
- TV digital tuner (A90/3) (with CODE 865 (TV tuner))
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system))
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with CODE 518 (Media interface))
