Function requirements, general

Exterior lights (ABL), general
The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.
- Lamp units in xenon design
The light functions of the low beams and high beams are output via xenon bulbs. The control is performed by the respective xenon light control unit.
The light functions of the parking lights, standing lights and turn signal lights are output over LEDs. Here, the front actuation modules 1 LED exterior lighting control the individual light functions.

The low beam and high beam light functions are actuated by the respective front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting. The front SAM control unit applies a control voltage to the respective input channel of the front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting to output the respective light function.
The parking, standing, turn signal, cornering, and infrared light functions (with code (610) Night View Assist) are controlled by the respective front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting. The respective headlamp control unit sends the request to output the light functions of the cornering and infrared light (with code (610) Night View Assist) via the headlamp LIN to the front actuation module 1 LED exterior lighting. To output the light functions of the parking lights, standing lights and turn signal lights, the front SAM control unit directly actuates the front actuation modules 1, LED exterior lighting.
- Lamp units in full LED version (static as of 01.09.2014):
The low beam and high beam light functions are controlled by the respective headlamp control unit.
The position, daytime running, turn signal, and side marker light functions (with code (460) Canada version or code (494) USA version) are controlled by the respective front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting. All light functions are output via LED.
The front SAM control unit sends the request to output the respective light function via the chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control units. The headlamp control units actuate the front actuation modules 2, LED exterior lighting via the headlamp LIN.
- Lamp units in full LED version (dynamic as of 01.09.2014):
The low beam and high beam light functions are controlled by the respective front LED matrix lamp unit control unit.
The light functions of the position, daytime running, turn signal, side marker (with code (460) Canada version or code (494) USA version), and cornering lights are controlled by the respective headlamp control unit. All light functions are output via LED.
The front SAM control unit sends the request to output the respective light functions via the chassis CAN 2 to the front LED matrix lamp unit control units and the headlamp control units.

Function sequence of thermal management (lamp units in full LED version)
The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LEDs. If the LEDs or the plastic housings for the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of excessively high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuating currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby lowering the heat development.
For active ventilation, the following additional components are integrated into the front lamp units:
- Left front lamp unit fan motor 1 (with code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic) or code (631) Full LED headlamp (without ILS), daytime running lamps integrated in headlamp, for left-hand traffic or code (632) Full LED headlamp (without ILS), daytime running lamps integrated in headlamp, for right-hand traffic)
- Left front lamp unit fan motor 2

Both fan motors are always actuated in a front lamp unit. The fan motors are either actuated immediately or with a time delay, depending on the active light function. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.
The headlamp control units evaluate the signals of five temperature sensors in each case and actuate the fan motors 1, front lamp unit accordingly.
The front actuation modules 2 LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals from three temperature sensors each and actuate the front lamp unit fan motors 2 accordingly.
- Lamp units in full LED version (dynamic):
The fan motors are actuated immediately in relation to the light function active (low or high beams). The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures. The front LED matrix lamp unit control units evaluate the signals from four temperature sensors each and actuate the front lamp unit fan motors 2 accordingly.
Vehicles up to 31.08.2014:
Both fan motors are always actuated in a front lamp unit. The fan motors are either actuated immediately or with a time delay, depending on the active light function. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.
The front actuation modules 1 LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals from four temperature sensors each and actuate the front lamp unit fan motors 1 accordingly.
The front actuation modules 2 LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals from three temperature sensors each and actuate front lamp unit fan motors 2 accordingly.
Function sequence, on-board network increase
When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the energy management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the front SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. To do so, the front SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage required for the corresponding light function. The lighting functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is to be activated are defined during production.
The following functions can be coded:
- Backup light actuation
- Rear fog light actuation (without code (460) Canada version and without code (494) USA version)
Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights
By switching off the exterior lights, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.
Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.
The low beams are already switched off with circuit 15 Off.
The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights manually via the exterior lights switch. If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams or the auto on/off driving lights and the driver door is then opened with circuit 15C On, the standing lights are switched off.
As soon as the energy management detects that the starting capability of the engine is impaired, the standing light is switched off.
If the "Ambient illumination" function has been activated via the control level in the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The low beams and the standing lights remain switched on for a fixed time interval of t = 60 s.
