Information on equipment variants 

The following list includes all possible versions of the front lamp units. To improve the readability of this function description, the following text does not reference the comprehensive equipment codes. Instead, signal words are used that create an association with the equipment cited.

The following variants of the front lamp units are offered, depending on the vehicle equipment:

Function requirements, general 

Exterior lights (ABL), general 

The exterior lights control all the safety and comfort-relevant functions of the front, side and rear lights of the vehicle.

The exterior lights comprise the following subfunctions:

Function sequence of thermal management (lamp units in full LED version) 

The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LEDs. If the LEDs or the plastic housings for the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of excessively high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuating currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby lowering the heat development.

For active ventilation, the following additional components are integrated into the front lamp units:

Both fan motors are always actuated in a front lamp unit. The fan motors are either actuated immediately or with a time delay, depending on the active light function. The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.

The front actuation modules 1 LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals from four temperature sensors each and actuate the front lamp unit fan motors 1 accordingly.

The front actuation modules 2 LED exterior lighting evaluate the signals from three temperature sensors each and actuate front lamp unit fan motors 2 accordingly.

Function sequence, on-board network increase 

When the on-board electrical system voltage is decreased by the energy management below the minimum voltage of a light function during normal driving operation, the front SAM control unit can suppress shutoff of the corresponding light function with the aid of the on-board electrical system increase. To do so, the front SAM control unit requests the minimum voltage required for the corresponding light function. The lighting functions for which the on-board electrical system increase is to be activated are defined during production.

The following functions can be coded:

Function sequence for switching off the exterior lights 

By switching off the exterior lights, the on-board electrical system load by the active standing or parking lights actuation is reduced.

IMPORTANT Discharge of the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is prevented.

The low beams are already switched off with circuit 15 Off.

The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights manually via the exterior lights switch. If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams or the auto on/off driving lights and the driver door is then opened with circuit 15C On, the standing lights are switched off.

As soon as the energy management detects that the starting capability of the engine is impaired, the standing light is switched off.

IMPORTANT If the "Ambient illumination" function has been activated via the control level in the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the engine is turned off. The low beams and the standing lights remain switched on for a fixed time interval of t = 60 s.
