- Standing lamp actuation function sequence
- Function sequence for lights on reminder warning
- Parking lights actuation function sequence
Standing lamp actuation function sequence
Turning the exterior lights switch (S1) to the standing lights position requests actuation of the standing lights.
The front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) directly reads in the status of the exterior lights switch and activates the standing lights actuation.
The front SAM control unit then sends the "Switch on standing light" request via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2), and on vehicles with code (550) Trailer hitch, to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) as well as the "Switch on standing light indicator lamp" request via the interior CAN to the instrument cluster (A1).
Vehicles up to 31.08.2014:
The front SAM control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left front standing light and parking light (E1e3) via the control input at the left front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting (E1n7)
- Right front standing light and parking light (E2e3) via the control input at the right front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting (E2n7)
- Left front side marker lamp (E6/1) (with code (460) Canada version or with code (494) USA version)
- Right front side marker lamp (E6/2) (with code (460) Canada version or with code (494) USA version)
Vehicles as of 01.09.2014:
The front SAM control unit sends the "Switch on standing light" request via the chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) to the left headlamp control unit (E1n9) and the right headlamp control unit (E2n9).
- Lamp units in full LED version (static)
The left headlamp control unit sends the "Switch on standing lights" request via the headlamp LIN 1 (LIN G1) to the left front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting (E1n8). The left front actuation module 2, exterior lighting actuates the left front standing light and parking light.
The right headlamp control unit sends the "Switch on standing lights" request via the headlamp LIN 2 (LIN G2) to the right front actuation module 1, LED exterior lights (E2n8). The right front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting actuates the right front standing light and parking light.
The front SAM control unit directly actuates the following components on vehicles with code (460) Canada version or code (494) USA version:
- Left front side-marker lamp
- Right front side-marker lamp
- Lamp units in full LED version (dynamic)
The left headlamp control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Position light (standing light) in the left position light, daytime running light, and turn signal light (E1e25) (not Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) vehicles)
- Position light (standing light) in the left position light, daytime running light, turn signal light, and ambient light (E1e26) (ECE vehicles only)
- Left front side marker lamp (E1e6) (with code (460) Canada version or code (494) USA version)

- Left license plate lamp (E19/1)
- Right license plate lamp (E19/2)
The standing lamp actuation of the rear lamp unit can be adapted. This means that the taillights are actuated with different intensity (pulse width modulated), depending on the ambient brightness.
The instrument cluster receives the "Switch on standing light indicator lamp" request, switches the scale illumination on, and actuates the standing light indicator lamp (A1e38) on vehicles as of 01.06.2012. The trailer recognition control unit (with code (550) Trailer hitch) receives the "Switch on standing lights" request and directly actuates the following components of the exterior lights on the trailer via the trailer socket (X58):
- Taillamps and parking lamps
- License plate lights
Additional function requirements for lights on reminder
- Standing lights ON
- Driver door OPEN
- Circuit 15C OFF
Function sequence for lights on reminder warning
The logic for requesting the lights on reminder function is stored in the front SAM control unit.
The left front door control unit (N69/1) sends the status of the driver door and the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The front SAM control unit receives this information and from it generates the request for output of the lights on reminder function and transmits this to the instrument cluster via the interior CAN. The instrument cluster then actuates the warning buzzer (A1h1). The message "switch light off" appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster.
The standing lights may be switched on because the low beams have been manually switched on, because of the auto on/off driving lights manually via the exterior lights switch.
If the standing lights have been activated because of the manually activated low beams or the auto on/off driving lights and the driver door is then opened with circuit 15C On, the standing lights are switched off.
Additional function requirements for parking lights actuation
- Engine switched off
Parking lights actuation function sequence
By turning the exterior lights switch to the left parking lights position or the right parking lights position, the parking lights actuation is requested for the corresponding side of vehicle.
The front SAM control unit reads in the status of the exterior lights switch directly and activates the parking lights actuation.
The front SAM control unit then sends the "Switch on left parking light" or "Switch on right parking light" request via the interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit, and in vehicles with code (550) Trailer hitch, to the trailer recognition control unit.
Left parking light:
Vehicles up to 31.08.2014:
The front SAM control unit directly actuates the left front standing light and parking light via the control input at the left front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting.
Vehicles as of 01.09.2014:
The front SAM control unit sends the "Switch on left parking light" request via the chassis CAN 2 to the left headlamp control unit.
- Lamp units in full LED version (static)
The left headlamp control unit sends the "Switch on left parking light" request via the left headlamp LIN to the left front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting.
The left front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting directly actuates the left front standing light and parking light.
- Lamp units in full LED version (dynamic)
The left headlamp control unit directly actuates the position light (standing light) in left the position light, daytime running light, and turn signal light (not ECE vehicles) or the position light (standing light) in the left position light, daytime running light, turn signal light, and ambient light (ECE vehicles only).
The rear SAM control unit directly actuates the parking light in the left brake light, taillight, and parking light (up to 31.08.2014) or the left taillight (as of 01.09.2014).
The trailer recognition control unit (with code (550) Trailer hitch) directly actuates the left taillight and parking light on the trailer via the trailer socket.
Right parking light:

The right headlamp control unit sends the "Switch on right parking light" request via the right headlamp LIN to the right front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting.
The right front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting directly actuates the right front standing light and parking light.
- Lamp units in full LED version (dynamic)
The right headlamp control unit directly actuates the position light (standing light) in the right position light, daytime running light, and turn signal light (not ECE vehicles) or the position light (standing light) in the right position light, daytime running light, turn signal light, and ambient light (ECE vehicles only).
The rear SAM control unit directly actuates the parking light in the right brake light, taillight, and parking light (up to 31.08.2014) or the right taillight (as of 01.09.2014).
The trailer recognition control unit (with code (550) Trailer hitch) directly actuates the right taillight and parking light on the trailer via the trailer socket.
If the interior CAN is in a "bus idle" state, the parking lights actuation remains saved in the rear SAM control unit until deactivation is requested by the front SAM control unit, even if this causes the on-board electrical system voltage to collapse and the on-board electrical system battery (G1) to be completely discharged.
If the engine is started with an active parking lights actuation, the front SAM control unit switches off the parking lights actuation.
