Remove/install rack-and-pinion steering - AR46.20-P-0600LW

DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES Information on preventing damage to electronic components due to electrostatic discharge   AH54.00-P-0001-01A
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Switch off easy entry and exit feature using Audio/COMAND control panel MODEL 205
with CODE 275 (Driver's seat, electrically adjustable with memory function)
NOTES The steering wheel may move to a different position if e.g. the driver door is opened or closed.
The steering wheel and the headliner may then be damaged if the holding device is installed.
 
2 Switch off ignition    
3 Turn steering wheel to central position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and secure with the retaining device NOTES The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching the steering coupling. Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

4 Detach left front and right front complete wheels   AR40.10-P-1101A
5 Remove rear and center section of lower engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LW
6 Remove tie rods from steering knuckles   AR46.40-P-0200LW 
7 Detach steering coupling at the steering shaft MODEL 205.0/1/2

9 Detach steering wiring harness bracket (2) at left and place to one side MODEL 205
without CODE M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
10 Open cover (8) at connecting point and fold to one side MODEL 205
with CODE M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
 
11 Support rack-and-pinion steering (3) and secure to prevent it from falling down    
12 Unscrew bolts (4, 5, 6) and remove rack-and-pinion steering (3) IMPORTANT MODEL 205
without CODE M005 (Vehicles with 4MATIC/all-wheel drive)
Installation:  Transfer retaining clip for steering wiring harness bracket (2).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the bolts (4, 5, 6) and mounting plates (7).
Position the bolts (4, 5, 6) first and then tighten in the following sequence:
  • Bolt (4)
  • Bolt (5)
  • Bolt (6)
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, electric rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1001-01Q 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, retaining plate for rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1002-01Q 
13 Detach steering coupling from rack-and-pinion steering (3) When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (3).  
AR46.10-P-8000LW 
INSPECT Check     
14 Check rack-and-pinion steering (3) After repairing an accident vehicle.  
IMPORTANT Evaluating steering gear when repairing accident vehicles   AH46.20-P-9409-01A
15 Install in the reverse order    
16 Enter new steering gear number of rack-and-pinion steering (3) in online vehicle data card using Vehicle Documentation system (VeDoc) When replacing the rack-and-pinion steering (3).
IMPORTANT Redocumentation is absolutely essential!
 
17 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200LW
