  Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Shift transmission (1) to position N    
2 Release parking brake    
3 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100CW
4 Detach ground line from battery   AR54.10-P-0003LW
5 Remove lower center and rear engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LW
6 Remove front reinforcement (2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front reinforcement/bracket to frame floor assembly *BA61.10-P-1002-01L 
7 Remove bracket (8) from exhaust system   AR49.10-P-5500LW
8 Disconnect electrical connector from electrical auxiliary oil pump (M42) and unclip electrical line from transmission (1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Make sure that the electrical line is routed and secured correctly. AR27.30-P-0651LW 
9 Release and detach electrical connector from intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT, and expose electrical line INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Make sure that the electrical line is routed and secured correctly. AR27.19-P-0550LWA 
10 Detach ground line (3) from transmission (1)    
11 Detach oil lines from transmission (1) and oil pan, seal using suitable stop plugs and place to one side NOTES
Thoroughly clean area around oil lines at connecting points on transmission (1).
Otherwise there may be malfunctions or even total failure of the transmission (1).

13 Remove engine cross member at rear   AR22.10-P-4360LWB
  Notes on bolted connections with self tapping screws NOTES
Never use impact wrench or compressed air tools for screwing in or unscrewing the bolts!
Otherwise the threads can get damaged.

14 Mark position of drive shaft relative to flange of transmission (1) with a color and remove drive shaft   AR41.10-P-0040-01LW
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Drift for releasing the fitting sleeves in the flexible couplings INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace bolts. WF58.50-P-4110-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Flex disk or joint flange at transmission/rear axle differential or propeller shaft *BA41.10-P-1001-01L 
    SPECIAL TOOL Counterholder Fig 5
15 Detach torque converter (6) from drive plate, and pry off drive plate uniformly using long wedge NOTES
Do not use an impact wrench or compressed air tools to screw out and screw in.
The threaded unions in the driver spider will otherwise be damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Replace bolts.

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, torque converter to driver spider *BA27.20-P-1002-01C

16 Unscrew bolts (1a) and remove transmission (1) from below NOTES
Secure the torque converter (6) to prevent it from falling down.
Otherwise damage will occur.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Align holes of torque converter (6) relative to threaded unions in drive plate.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, automatic transmission to engine

17 Remove torque converter (6) using grab handles If necessary.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Apply a little multi-purpose paste to bearing journal (6a).

    Installed height of torque converter *BE27.20-P-1001-01E

CLEAN Clean     
18 Remove corrosion from crankshaft   AR03.20-P-1000-01A
    Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
    Multi-purpose paste *BR00.45-Z-1009-06A 
INSPECT Check     
19 Check threaded unions in drive plate If threaded unions are damaged or loosened

Replace drive plate.

20 Install in the reverse order    
21 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary   AR27.00-P-0270W 
22 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and delete if necessary    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
23 Perform transmission adaptation using diagnostic system After replacement or repair of transmission (1)  
24 Reset data on service life of torque converter lockup clutch using diagnostic system After replacement of torque converter (6)  
INSPECT Check

25 Perform engine test run and check transmission (1) for proper operation and leak tightness
