MODEL 164.1/8 up to Model Year 2008

General information

The wiper system controls the wiping and washing of the windshield and rear window. The wiper system comprises the following subfunctions:

Windshield

IMPORTANT The antilock device, blockage detection, braking and stopping of the wiper arms in the end position are performed automatically by the wiper motor (M6/1) and front SAM control unit (N10).

IMPORTANT Cancellation of front wiper functions:

Wiping is stopped immediately if the engine hood is opened while the vehicle is stationary.

The ATA [ETW] engine hood switch (S62) sends notification of this status to the rear SAM control unit (N10/8). This forwards the data to the front SAM control unit, which then interrupts the actuation process. The wiper function is continued under the following conditions:

Rear window

Rear window wash

The washing function is activated by pressing the combination switch (S4) beyond the catch point. The window washer fluid pump (M5/1) is actuated directly by the front SAM control unit. At the same time the rear SAM control unit actuates the rear door wiper motor (M6/4).
