Antenna system (ATS), function - GF82.62-P-0001GZU

MODEL 164 with CODE (494) USA version up to Model Year 2008

Preliminary remarks

The following description deals with the antenna systems for

are described in the following.

IMPORTANT In addition, the RF [HF] signals for the Keyless Go control unit (N69/5) (authorization signal) (Keyless Go (code 889)) and radio remote central locking (RRCL [FZV]) are explained.

General information

The various antennas are designed according to their special reception and transmission ranges. There are active and passive antennas. The antennas can be designed as transmission, reception or as transmission/reception antennas. The antennas transmit or receive voice information by converting electromagnetic radio waves into an electric voltage and vice versa.

Active antennas

Active antennas are supplied with power and have an integrated amplifier. Power supply is possible using separate lines or with coaxial lines (phantom power), over which the actual signals are transferred simultaneosuly. The active antennas installed include

The antennas are integrated into the roof antenna module (A2/93).

Passive antennas

Passive antennas do not require a power supply.

The following passive antennas are installed

Transmission/reception antennas

The transmission/reception antennas are

Reception antennas

The reception antennas are

IMPORTANT The Keyless Go antenna system is described in separate documentation. The authorization signal for Keyless Go is received by the FM/AM/RRCL antenna.

Description, block diagram of antenna system

The signals received by the FM/AM/RRCL [FZV] antenna (AM, FM, RRCL [FZV]) and the authorization signal for the Keyless Go function are filtered and amplified in the antenna amplifier of the roof antenna module.

The antenna signals FM2 and FM3 rear window are taken from the rear window antenna FM amplifier, amplified and transferred to the roof antenna module.

A diversity processor in the roof antenna module selects the strongest signal from the FM antenna signals and transfers it to the COMAND operating, display and control unit.

The AM signal is also fed to COMAND operating, display and control unit.

The RRCL [FZV] signal is demodulated in the roof antenna module and transferred to the rear SAM control unit for further processing.

The Keyless Go authorization signal is forwarded to the Keyless Go control unit for processing.

Either the satellite signal or the terrestrial signal from the SDAR antenna is transferred to the SDAR control unit, depending on the location of the vehicle. Outside of cities, the terrestrial signal is usually used.

The signals processed by the SDAR control unit travel over the MOST digital data bus (Media Oriented System Transport) to the COMAND operating, display and control unit.

The telephone signals are transmitted and received by the telephone antenna.

The telephone antenna is connected to the portable CTEL via the UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface).

The UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal portable CTEL Interface) is connected to the UPCI (Universal portable CTEL Interface) control unit together with the portable CTEL via the data and control lines. This is connected to the COMAND operating, display and control unit via the MOST bus.

Only the wiring and telephone antenna are preequipped for the portable CTEL UPCI system (code 388).

The signals received by the GPS antenna are transferred to the GPS antenna splitter.

From the GPS antenna splitter, the signals are transferred on to the COMAND operating, display and control unit and to the emergency call system control unit. There, the signals are required for location finding.

The emergency call system control unit operates in the same manner as a telephone. If the emergency call system is active, it transmits and receives signals over the TELE AID antenna. If transmission or reception on the TELE AID antenna is subject to interference, transmission and reception is accomplished using the TELE AID backup antenna.

If the TELE AID emergency call system is active, other audio systems and the portable CTEL are muted if they are switched on.
