Function requirements for symbol and ambiance illumination, general

Symbol and ambiance illumination in general

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature consists of the following subfunctions:

Additional function requirements, search and symbol illumination

Function sequence for search and symbol illumination

The following information is read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster (A1) for controlling the search and symbol illumination:

IMPORTANT If the "ambient illumination" function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key (A8/1). This causes "Standing lights actuation active" status to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination.

If the driver door is then opened, the ambient illumination function goes off. "Standing lights actuation active" status is canceled, and the instrument cluster deactivates the search and symbol illumination. The controls in the vehicle are not illuminated again until the transmitter key in the EZS control unit (N73) is moved to the radio position (circuit 15R On).

The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the following control units:

The control units read in the circuit 58d signal and actuate the search and symbol illumination of the connected or integrated controls.

The instrument cluster also transmits the circuit 58d signal to the following control unit via the engine compartment CAN (CAN C):

The DVD player (with code (864) Rear entertainment system or code (866) Rear entertainment preinstallation and code (494) USA version) makes the circuit 58d signal available to the following components on the telematics CAN:

The overhead control panel control unit actuates the ambient lamp (A67e3) in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67) and transmits the request for switching on the footwell illumination via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

IMPORTANT The search and symbol illumination of the switches located on the overhead control panel control unit is switched on when a vehicle door is opened even without reception of a circuit 58d signal with a brightness value that corresponds to 100 %.

If the status of the vehicle doors subsequently does not change, the search and symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s. The opening or closing of a vehicle door during the time interval triggers a restart.

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:

IMPORTANT The footwell lamps are actuated with a fixed brightness value when the central locking (CL [ZV]) is unlocked and the status of circuit 15R is On.

This is defined via the software calibration number (SCN) coding.

When a vehicle door is opened or the interior lights switch, 1st seat row (N70s4) or the rear dome lamps switch (N70s2) is operated, the footwell lamps are actuated with a brightness value that corresponds to 100 %.

The status of circuit 15 and the status of the central locking system are transmitted by the EZS control unit and the status of the vehicle doors is transmitted by the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit also actuates the following components in vehicles with code (876) Interior lights package:

The left front door control unit actuates the following components:

The right front door control unit actuates the following components:

The rear SAM control unit actuates the following components in vehicles with code (876) Interior lights package:

In vehicles with code (847) 3rd seat row and code (876) Interior lights package, the overhead control panel control unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the operating switches integrated in the 3rd seat row dome lamp (E15/3).

With model 164.8 with code (845) 3rd seat row folding down electrically, the folding rear bench seat control unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the following components:

The steering column tube module actuates the search and symbol illumination of the following components:

The upper control panel control unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the rotary light switch (S1).

The search and symbol illumination is switched off immediately when the vehicle is locked. Actuation of the search and symbol illumination of operating units in accordance with the status of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) only takes place with circuit 15R On. For circuit 15 OFF the search and symbol illumination is actuated corresponding to the daytime brightness level. The rain/light sensor data is read in by the overhead control panel control unit and made available on the interior CAN.

Additional function requirements, ambiance illumination (Model 164.8 as of 1.7.09 with code (877) Ambiance illumination and model 164.1 as of 1.8.10 with code (877) Ambiance illumination)

Function sequence for ambiance illumination (Model 164.8 as of 1.7.09 with code (877) Ambiance illumination and model 164.1 as of 1.8.10 with code (877) Ambiance illumination)

The ambiance illumination encompasses the actuation of different components for diffuse illumination of the instrument panel and vehicle doors.

The intensity of the ambiance illumination can be adjusted in five stages using the "Settings" operation level in the instrument cluster.

The following information is made available to the rear SAM control unit on the interior CAN for controlling the ambiance illumination:

The rear SAM control unit reads in the appropriate information, evaluates it and actuates the following components:
