Remove/install radius rod - AR35.20-P-0111T

6.3.06 Clamp off filler hose of fuel tank replaced by empty fuel tank Step 19
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by body parts being jammed or crushed. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by brake fluid spraying out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. AS42.46-Z-0001-01A
NOTES Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts   AH00.00-N-0001-01A
NOTES While working on the rear axle, care must be taken to ensure that the surface of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the parts will be affected    
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components only when vehicle is in the ready-to-drive condition.    
1 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS. Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS:
Select menu item "SBC-Sensotronic Brake Control"/"Deactivate 'SBC' system".
Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.		  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A

2 Empty air springs (6i) completely using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489 AR32.22-P-1500-04T

    NOTESInstallation:  The filling process of the air springs should be observed otherwise they will be irreparably damaged: AR32.22-P-1500-03T

4.4 Remove exhaust system from pipe connection Model 211.023 /026 /223 /226 AR49.10-P-7281T
5 Remove rear section components on underfloor paneling   AR61.30-P-1001T
6 Unhook rear brake cables from automatic slack adjuster for parking brake   AR42.20-P-0525T
7 Detach propeller shaft (106) from flange on rear axle center assembly (50) IMPORTANT Apply color markings indicating position of propeller shaft relative to rear axle center assembly and propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) to ensure that components are fitted at correct ex factory installation positions on reinstallation, otherwise vibration may occur along drivetrain.
IMPORTANT Flexible disk remains on propeller shaft.		  
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Attach the propeller shaft. AR41.10-P-0050-04I

8 Detach fitting sleeves of flexible coupling on flange of rear axle center assembly (50)   AR41.10-P-0050-09DA
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks.   WF58.50-P-4110-01A
9 Unscrew bolts from propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a) and remove rear part of propeller shaft (106) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Assemble propeller shaft in correct position. Only tighten the bolts of the propeller shaft intermediate bearing after attaching the flexible coupling to the rear axle center assembly (50): AR41.10-P-0050-05DA

10 Remove rear wheels.    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE Remove/install wheels, rotate if necessary   AP40.10-P-4050Z
11.1 Remove rear brake pads Except model 211.076/ 276/ 077/ 277
NOTES Secure rear brake caliper to vehicle to relieve load on brake hose to prevent brake hose from being damaged during repair work.		 AR42.10-P-1700R
11.2 Detach brake caliper from rear axle Model 211.076 /276 /077 /277
NOTES Secure rear brake caliper to vehicle to relieve load on brake hose to prevent brake hose from being damaged during repair work.		 AR42.10-P-0080RA
12 Remove fender liners from rear fenders Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489 AR88.10-P-1400T
13 Disconnect electrical connectors of brake and chassis components at the rear axle Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489 AR32.22-P-1500-01TH
14 Unclip electrical feed lines (arrows) for left and right rear RPM sensors along with the right rear brake pad contact sensor to remove them from their retaining clamps. Vehicles without AIRmatic  
15.1 Pry air springs (6i) off the frame floor using assembly lever. Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489
IMPORTANT The retaining clips of the air springs are destroyed in the process.
IMPORTANTInstallation:  Slide on the air springs until the new retaining clips can be heard engaging in the frame floor. The air springs should be aligned and should not have kinks.		  
15.2 Remove left and right rear springs Vehicles without AIRmatic

16 Detach left and right shock absorbers (6j) from spring control arms Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489

17 Raise wheel carrier (7) with transmission jack and transmission platform until the rear axle shaft (37) is approximately horizontal COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TOOLS *WE58.40-Z-1018-11A

18 Detach torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7) TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA35.20-P-1002-03C 
19 Drain fuel tank. Vehicles with diesel engine except engine 629 AR47.10-P-4001T

20 Remove fuel tank filler hose (17)    
21 Lower rear axle carrier (1).   AR35.10-P-0020-01T

22 Use felt marker to mark installation position of torque strut (3) on rear axle carrier (1) and on the torque strut (3) NOTES Do not use scratches or notches to mark the components, as this could reduce their service life.  
23 Detach torque strut (3) from rear axle carrier (1) and remove. IMPORTANTInstallation:  Transfer installation position marking to new torque strut and bolt torque strut to rear axle carrier in the correct position.

24 Replace retaining clips of air springs (6i) Vehicles with AIRmatic (semi-active air suspension), code 489 AR32.22-P-1500-02T
25 Install in the reverse order    
26.1 Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS Vehicles with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC)
IMPORTANT The following steps should be run through in STAR DIAGNOSIS: Select "Initial startup following repair"/"Replacement of brake disks" menu item. Then process all the individual steps from top to bottom.		  
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory   AD00.00-P-2000-04A
    STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system *WH58.30-Z-1048-13A 
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
26.2 Press the brake pedal several times until the brake pads contact the brake disks Vehicles with Adaptive Brake (ABR)
IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.		  
27 Perform chassis alignment   AR40.20-P-0200T
