Remove/install valve springs and/or valve stem seals - AR05.30-P-3500AMG (ML63 AMG): Notes

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install    
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
1 Remove cylinder head covers Model 164, 251 AR01.20-P-5014GZS
    Models 209, 211, 219 AR01.20-P-5014TMG
    Model 216, 221 AR01.20-P-5014SMG
2 Remove camshafts Up to engine number 001177 AR05.20-P-6992ANG 
    from engine number 001178 AR05.20-P-6992AMG 
3 Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements (2)   AR05.00-P-2011AMG 
4 Rotate piston of the cylinder to be worked on to TDC IMPORTANTInstallation:  Before installing the camshaft sprockets, turn the crankshaft back into the starting position to 40° after ignition TDC at cylinder 1.  
5 Connect cylinder leakage tester (1) IMPORTANT Screw connection hose for cylinder leakage testing unit (1) into relevant spark plug bore.  
    SPECIAL TOOL Thread adapter

6 Pressurize the compression chamber IMPORTANT The pressure should be around 5 bar.  
7 Screw retaining fork and detent with hinged bearing into cylinder head SPECIAL TOOL Valve assembly tools case Fig 2
8 Attach detent depressor with lever handle and thrust piece into detent with hinged bearing, align IMPORTANT Position the thrust piece vertically at the upper valve spring retainer (3) and align parallel to the grid with the joint bearing.

9 Depress valve spring (4) and remove split valve spring retainer locks (5) IMPORTANT Remove split valve spring retainer locks (5) using tweezers or a magnetic finger

10 Remove upper valve spring retainer (3) and valve spring (4) NOTES Do not allow the valves to come into contact with the piston crowns, otherwise they will be bent.
IMPORTANT The valve springs of the intake and exhaust valves are identical.
 
11 Remove valve stem seal (6) IMPORTANTInstallation:  Replace valve stem seal (6) after inspecting the lower valve spring retainer (7). AR05.30-P-3500-02VA

12 Remove lower valve spring retainer (7)    
INSPECT Checking     
13 Inspect surface of valve stems for roughness and ridging IMPORTANT Visual inspection or with nail. Replace valves with a rough stem surface or formation of ridging: ↓  
    Remove valves AR05.30-P-3511AMG 
14 Inspect upper and lower valve spring retainer IMPORTANT Inspect the valve spring retainer for burrs, replace if necessary.  
15 Install in the reverse order
