Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (with code (EF5) MB Audio 20 CD radio, (NTG 2.5))
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (with code (EU1) COMAND, APS)
Function requirements, general
- Status of circuit 30 "ON" or circuit 15R "ON".
- One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
- Mobile phone system operating error-free
- Mobile phone and audio equipment switched on
- Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
- Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
- Compatible mobile phone inserted into UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder (Universal Portable Cell Phone Interface), which is connected to the Bluetooth module (with code (EH2) Comfort telephony), or Bluetooth-capable mobile phone authorized in vehicle and on the audio equipment (without code (EH2) Comfort telephony)
So that a bluetooth-capable mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment can be operated in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

General information on accepting call and rejecting a call
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network.
The "Accept call or reject call with the mobile phone system" function comprises the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence, call signal
- Accept call function sequence using mobile phone buttons
- Accept call function sequence over telephone buttons or keypad on audio equipment
- Function sequence, accepting call with the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
- Function sequence, accept call via voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with code (EU1) COMAND, APS)
- Function sequence, telephone call in hands-free mode
- Reject call function sequence using mobile phone buttons
- Reject call function sequence over telephone buttons or keypad on audio equipment
- Function sequence, reject call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
The system is described using comfort telephony as an example, with code (EH2) Comfort telephony. Deviations for basic telephony, without code (EH2) Comfort telephony) are identified by the symbol

Operating instructions
A call is accepted or rejected via:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on the audio equipment
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- Voice control of VCS [SBS] (accepting only) (with code (EU1) COMAND, APS)
Function sequence, call signal
The mobile phone receives a call signal via the following route:
- Telephone and fax antenna (except model 463.202/303/306 with code (EH2) Comfort telephony or with code (ZU8) USA version) or
- Radio and cell phone antenna (A28) (in model 463.202/303/306)
- Direct line
- Radio and cell phone antenna splitter (A28/1) (in model 463.202/303/306)
- Direct line
- E-net compensator (with code (EH2) Comfort telephony)
- Direct line
- UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface)
Information about the caller is displayed on the mobile phone's screen. The display on the mobile phone's screen is forwarded internally.
At the same time, the call signal is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following route:
- UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface)
- Bluetooth module
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
In vehicles with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/ kardon Logic 7), the audio equipment transmits the call tone to the sound system amplifier via MOST. From there, the ring tone is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
At the same time, the audio equipment mutes the currently active audio source (e.g. in radio mode) (MUTE). This takes place internally in the "audio unit".
The caller identification is displayed by the audio equipment on the display of the audio equipment.
The caller ID is also displayed via the interior CAN in the instrument cluster.
In vehicles without code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7), the call tone is transmitted directly from the audio equipment via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
With basic telephony, the mobile phone receives the call signal via the mobile phone antenna. The call signal is then forwarded to the "audio unit" in the following way:
- Mobile phone antenna
- Bluetooth antenna
- Direct line
Accept call function sequence using mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone serves to accept the call in hands-free mode. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.
Accept call function sequence over telephone buttons or keypad on audio equipment
The call signal results in the caller identification being displayed on the screen of the audio equipment. When the "Accept phone call" button on the audio equipment is pressed or the "Accept" function in the "Telephone (Tel)" base function is selected via the keypad on the audio equipment, the call is accepted in hands-free mode.
The control signals from the buttons on the "audio unit" are processed internally.
Function sequence, accept call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
The call is accepted in hands-free mode by pressing the accept/ terminate phone call button (S111s3). The control signal from the accept/terminate phone call button is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following components:
- Direct line
- LIN converter
- LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
Function sequence, accept call via VCS [SBS] (with code (EU1) COMAND, APS)
The voice control is activated by pressing the VCS [SBS] switch. The control signal from the VCS [SBS] ON switch is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
In vehicles with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/ kardon Logic 7), the signal tone is transmitted by the audio equipment to the sound system amplifier via MOST.
From there, the signal tone is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
In vehicles without code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7), the signal tone is transmitted directly from the audio equipment via direct lines to the following speakers:

The call is only accepted with the corresponding voice command. The voice commands are registered by the hands-free system microphone group and forwarded via a direct line to the audio equipment.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

In general, the telephone connection is established in handsfree mode for basic telephony and for comfort telephony after accepting the call.
With comfort telephony, if the mobile phone is taken out of the UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder after establishing the phone connection in hands-free mode and thus disconnected from the audio equipment, then the phone call is conducted in "private mode".
With comfort telephony, if the mobile phone is inserted into the UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder again during an ongoing phone call, the phone call is conducted again in hands-free mode.
Reject call function sequence using mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "End" button on the mobile phone rejects the call. The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.
Reject call function sequence over telephone buttons or keypad on audio equipment
The call is rejected by pressing the "End" button on the audio equipment or by activating the "END" function in the "Telephone (Tel)" base function. The control signals from the telephone buttons on the "audio unit" are processed internally.
Function sequence, reject call using multifunction steering wheel button groups
Pressing the accept/terminate phone call button rejects the call.
The control signal from the accept/terminate phone call button is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following components:
- Direct line
- LIN converter
- LIN
- Steering column tube module
