Telephone operation function 

The telephone system CAN-Be operated as follows:

Function 

After the request, e.g. through the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), the telecommunications control unit (N112) transmits and receives the telephone radio signals with telephone antenna (A2/49a1) (model 211.0) or with telephone antenna (A2/22) (model 211.2). In portable CTEL mode the signals are transmitted via the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the telephone interface (A34/4).

The E-net compensator (A28/3) has the task of compensating for losses caused by the higher transmission frequency of the E-net by means of amplification.

When the telephone is ready for operation, the reception field strength is indicated in five increments on the display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

All the control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals when hands-free system is activated) are transmitted via MOST (Media Oriented System Transport).

IMPORTANT For communication with MOST participants the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires an interface, the telephone interface (A34/4).

The battery of the portable CTEL (A34/6) is charged via the telephone interface (A34/4). The battery is charged automatically as soon as the telephone interface (A34/4) is active, irrespective of whether the portable CTEL (A34/6) is switched on or off.

IMPORTANT The telephone is only available as a dealer option in the USA. However, the vehicles are equipped for retrofitting MOTOROLA, TDMA, CDMA or GSM portable CTELs.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:

With code (813) voice control system (VCS) 

The voice control system control unit (A35/11) is connected to the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via MOST The voice control system (SBS) is used for telephone operation as well as for some audio operating function (e.g. station search function, track change function with CD etc.). The audio source is muted automatically during the phone call. It is possible to listen to the phone call via the speakers.

Hands-free mode 

During a phone call it must be possible for the user to hold the conversation via the hands-free system. For this the hands-free system microphone group (A67/b1) is located in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67). From there the microphone signals are passed on via the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) to the telecommunications control unit (N112). The incoming audio signals are digitized and transmitted via MOST to the audio gateway control unit (N93/1). There the signals are conditioned and output via the vehicle speakers. Hands-free is controlled via pressing a button "microphone ON", "microphone OFF" on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).

Telephone variants 

There is the choice of the following variants for telephone operation:

Telediagnosis function 

The telediagnosis function makes it possible to transfer a roadside assistance call to DaimlerChrysler Customer Service, Customer Assistance Center (CAC).

The following services are available:

Operation is effected via the MB-Info and breakdown assistance button group (S93/6). The telephone conversation is processed solely via the hands-free system.

In the process the position of the vehicle as well as information on vehicle identification (model, year of construction, engine) and information on the current vehicle status (e.g. kilometer reading, engine temperature, battery voltage, fault indications and warning messages displayed) are transmitted to the Center.

A short time after the deployment (e.g. breakdown) a voice connection to the Customer Assistance Center (CAC) is made automatically. If necessary, the nearest workshop is notified by CAC in order to provide roadside assistance on site.

The use of the telediagnosis service requires the release by the service provider.

The central gateway control unit (N93) is the interface between the interior CAN (CAN-B), engine compartment CAN (CAN-C) and diagnosis. It transmits the diagnosis data from the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) to the data link connector (X11/4). The central gateway control unit (N93) is required for telediagnosis. It collects and processes the status messages and fault messages.

Making roadside assistance call 

The breakdown assistance button (S93/6s2) is located in the center armrest (wrench symbol).

If pressed for longer than t = 2 s, the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) shows a "Establishing telediagnosis call" message. If the voice connection to CAC is set up, the message "telediagnosis connection active" appears. The message is no longer displayed in the instrument cluster (A1) once the roadside assistance call has ended.

MB-Info call function 

With the MB-Info call an automatic connection is set up to the Customer Assistance Center (CAC). This pure voice connection CAN-Be used to request all the available information related to the vehicle at no charge.

The following services are available:

MB-Transmit information call 

The Info call is triggered via the MB-Info button (S93/6s1) on the left next to the handset.

After confirmation with the OK button a voice connection is automatically made to the Customer Assistance Center (CAC). The operator in the CAC then notes the inquiries.

E-Call emergency call system 

The E-Call emergency call system is based on an emergency call transmission/reception system via the mobile phone network and position finding by means of a GPS localizing system.

An emergency call CAN-Be triggered manually or automatically (crash signal). The system is triggered manually by pressing the SOS switch (S93/3s1).

The emergency call is transmitted over telephone antenna (A2/49a1) (model 211.0) or over telephone antenna (A2/22) (model 211.2) and forwarded to the emergency call headquarters, where it is decoded and then forwarded immediately to the responsible command center. In case of emergency the system has the emergency call system left backup antenna (A2/54) and emergency call system right backup antenna (A2/55).

IMPORTANT The SOS emergency call telegram is transmitted via the D-mobile two-way radio network.

Functional reliability 

In order to guarantee a reliable network connection, 3 telephone antenna (1 main antenna and 2 auxiliary antennae) are available. The E-Call emergency call system must be diagnosis-capable. The telecommunications control unit (N112) is connected directly to the central gateway control unit (N93) via the interior CAN (CAN-B).

SMS text messages 

Requirements:

Create SMS Process SMS 

In the basic service menu the "Mail" button leads to the creation, dispatch and administration of text messages (short message service - SMS).

The following options are available:

Characters can be entered using the entry aid or on the numeric keypad.

Transmitting the SMS is also connected to these functions. A receiver CAN-Be entered or selected in the telephone book.

Data safety, SMS buffer 

When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved. Although it may be that up to 4 characters go missing. When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost.

WAP function 

The telephone operation and SMS operation have been supplemented by a WAP function with reduced internet status. Here it is only possible to directly access the desired information within the service menu offered as well as send and receive an E-mail.

Internet function 

With Internet access via the Mercedes-Benz Portal and an enhanced online function there is the facility of sending and receiving e-mails as well as calling up an unlimited number of Internet pages. Text CAN-Be shown on the display and edited on the control panel.

The Internet messages sent via the telephone/transmitting and receiving stations are made available by a WAP/Internet browser integrated in the telecommunications control unit (N112) and transmitted to the central computer located in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) via MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) and vice versa.

The constant communication between these two computers must be guaranteed for the Telematics function.

Radio module 

The two-way radio modules planned for the American market are of a modular design and CAN-Be exchanged by the dealer. The latest components available are used.
