Cornering illumination

Function requirements

Function

The cornering illumination function enables better illumination of road in the direction of the turn-off and it is realized over the front fog lamps. Here, only one front fog lamp, for forward travel the inside and for reverse travel the outside one, is actuated respectively. Cornering illumination is always switched on and off dimmed.

Function, dimming and system diagnosis are controlled by the driver-side SAM control unit for the left front fog lamp and by the front passenger-side SAM control unit for the right front fog lamp. Cornering illumination is defined by the turn signaling function or by the steering angle, as detected by the steering angle sensor, and sent from the steering column module over CAN-B to the driver-side SAM control unit. The driver-side SAM control unit forwards the request to the front passenger-side SAM control unit.

If the request is suddenly canceled, the cornering illumination function remains active for a minimum switch-on period of approx. 2 s.

IMPORTANT In the event of any rapid change in the turn signaling function or the steering angle, both front fog lamps may be briefly activated at the same time. The left and right turn signal switch (S4s1) has a higher priority than the steering angle sensor.

If the hazard warning flasher function is activated, the corresponding front fog lamp is immediately switched off without dimming.

Dynamic curve illumination

Vehicles with code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)

Function requirements

Function

The dynamic curve illumination ensures an optimum illumination of the road during cornering. For this purpose, the low beam is swiveled horizontally towards the center of the corner. This is based on a conventional bi-xenon headlamp. The headlamp unit is mounted in a support frame enabling it to be pivoted.

When turning into a curve, the inside headlamp unit swivels in by up to 15°, while the outer one swivels in by up to 7.5°. Dynamic curve illumination actuation depends on the following set variables:

The steering angle is the direct input parameter.

The vehicle speed influences the system's control response (ratio of steering angle to swivel angle).

Low vehicle speeds require a smaller transformation ratio to prevent the pattern of light from appearing jumpy, e.g. in urban traffic.

At medium speeds, there is no immediate reaction to relatively minor changes in the steering angle, while at higher speeds system responses are dampened to a significantly greater degree. A range with lower sensitivity and greater damping is provided (approx. ±6° steering angle) to compensate for the natural weaving of the vehicle when traveling straight ahead.

The steering wheel angle determined by the steering angle sensor is placed on CAN-C by the steering column module.

The data on vehicle speed are made available on CAN-C by the ESP control unit.

The central gateway control unit forwards this information over CAN-D and thus to the xenon headlamp control units.

The motors for the dynamic curve illumination are actuated over LIN by the corresponding xenon headlamp control unit.

Feedback on the instantaneous position and any occurring faults, such as short circuits or open circuits, is sent to the corresponding xenon headlamp control unit.

Backup function in the case of a fault

If a fault is detected, the bi-xenon lamp in question is switched off and the corresponding front fog lamp is activated. This serves to prevent oncoming traffic from being dazzled.

Freeway light

Vehicles with code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)

Function requirements

Function (right-hand traffic)

As from a vehicle speed > 90 km/h, the optical power of the bi-xenon lamps is increased by the corresponding xenon headlamp control unit to 38 W.

After reaching a vehicle speed > 110 km/h, the left bi-xenon lamp light beam is increased in addition by actuating the light distribution cylinder motor over LIN. This in turn serves to increase its range. If vehicle speed drops to less than 80 km/h, the "freeway lights" function is deactivated.

IMPORTANT For left-hand traffic, the light distribution cylinder motor in the right front lamp unit (E2) is accordingly actuated.

Extended front fog lamp

Vehicles with code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)

Function requirements

Function (right-hand traffic)

With active rear fog lamp actuation and at a vehicle speed in excess of 70 km/h, the xenon headlamp control unit on the left front lamp unit (E1) actuates the dynamic curve illumination motor and the light distribution cylinder motor over LIN. The headlamp unit is swiveled by 8° outwards and the portion of the light-dark boundary increasing to the right is covered up.

This serves to reduce self-glare while improving road illumination at the side.

Deactivation

IMPORTANT When the "extended front fog lamp" is active, the "dynamic curve illumination" function is switched off.

For left-hand traffic, the dynamic curve illumination motor and light distribution cylinder motor on the right front lamp unit are actuated correspondingly.
