Removing and installing shock absorber with front spring - AR32.20-P-0225D

    Detaching and attaching hexagon collared bolt on front axle shaft AR33.30-P-0620-05D

1 Remove front wheel    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050Z
2.1 Detach twelve-point collared nut (61) on front axle shaft First version AR33.30-P-0620-01A
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.30-P-1001-02A 
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Caulker for securing twelve-point collared nut   WF58.50-P-3330-01A
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Bolted connection, front axle shaft to front axle shaft flange, modified   BT33.30-P-0003-01D
3.1 Detach hexagon collared bolt (61a) on front axle shaft Second version AR33.30-P-0620-05D
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA33.30-P-1004-02A 
4 Detach brake hose bracket from shock absorber shackle    
5 Remove cables for rpm sensor and brake pad wear sensor from guides IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure cable is correctly routed.  
6 Press tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle (5)   AR46.40-P-0200-02C

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA46.40-P-1002-01A 
7 Press supporting joint (7) out of steering knuckle (5)   AR33.20-P-0440-01D

8 Pull steering knuckle (5) outwards and slide front axle shaft (60) out of front axle shaft flange NOTESCover the front axle carrier in the area of the front axle shaft so that the rubber boot is not damaged.   
9 Press follower joint (8) out of steering knuckle (5) NOTESSupport steering knuckle and secure it to prevent it falling.  AR33.20-P-0500-01D

10 Hook steering knuckle (5) onto upper wishbone using shop-made hook (arrow)    
REFER TO SHOP-MADE TOOLS Hook for suspending steering knuckle   WF58.50-P-0400-01A
11 Remove lower engine compartment covering   AR61.20-P-1105AB
12.1 Press out right front axle shaft (60) NOTES Do not damage the rubber boot and rpm sensor rotor. AR33.30-P-0620-02A
13.1 Drive out left front axle shaft (60) NOTES Do not damage the plastic guard ring, rubber boot and rpm sensor rotor. AR33.30-P-0620-03A
14 Remove torsion bar (22) on front axle   AR32.20-P-0300E 
DANGER Risk of injury  with trapped or crushed fingers  when working on springs or spring-loaded components Use only approved tensioning devices; additionally shield off hazardous area if necessary.
Inspect special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
Wear protective gloves.

15 Clamp front spring (12) IMPORTANT Mark front spring relative to spring compressor (01). AR32.20-P-0200-05D

16 Remove cover cap (11e) from upper shock absorber mounting    
17 Detach upper shock absorber mounting from front end   AR32.25-P-0105-02D 
    SPECIAL TOOL Socket wrench, 17mm Fig 9
    SPECIAL TOOL Socket wrench, 16 mm Fig 10
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut (11p), shock absorber to front end. *BA32.25-P-1001-01B 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Lock nut (11a), shock absorber to front end. *BA32.25-P-1002-01B 
18 Remove plate (11b) and rubber mount (11c)    
19 Detach shock absorber mounting from lower wishbone (4) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut (11u), shock absorber to wishbone. *BA32.25-P-1003-01B 
REFER TO COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS Bolted connection, shock absorber to lower wishbone, modified   BT32.20-P-0002-01D 
20 Remove shock absorber with shackle (11) and front spring (12)    
21 Remove front axle shaft (60)    
22 Remove fastening parts (11y, 11d, 11f, 11h) INSPECT Check fastening parts and replace if necessary.  
23 Remove front spring (12) from shock absorber with shackle IMPORTANTInstallation:  Ensure that the rubber mounts (13a, 13b) are installed in the correct position. Left lower rubber mount (13b): Arrow on rubber mount points towards the front in the direction of travel.
Right lower rubber mount (13b): Arrow on rubber mount points towards the rear opposite the direction of travel.
Fasten upper rubber mount (13a) to front spring with adhesive tape (to prevent it slipping).
 
24.1 Release front spring (12) Only if the front spring is being replaced.
After replacing the front spring or rubber mount: ↓
AR32.20-P-0200-05D 
    Check and correct headlamp adjustment AP82.10-P-8260A
25 Check shock absorber (11) and replace if necessary   AR32.25-P-0121A 
26.1 Remove cap (11j) from shock absorber If necessary, in order to remove the rubber mount (13b). AR32.25-P-0105-03D 
27 Check rubber boots on front axle shaft If necessary, after checking: ↓  
    Replace rubber boots on front axle shaft AR33.30-P-0660A
28 Install in the reverse order
