KNOCKING/PINGING-ACCELERATION/CRUISE (VIN Y) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step	Inspection	Results	Action
1	VERIFY PCM DTCs Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .) Are any DTCs displayed?	Yes	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting. (See DTC TABLE [PCM (VIN Y)] .)
1		No	Go to the next step.
2	REPLACE FUEL Drain the remaining fuel in the fuel tank and add the specified fuel. Leave idling for approx. 15 min to refill the hose with fuel. Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?	Yes	Symptom troubleshooting completed. (If customer has used fuel additive, give them advice not to use it)
2		No	Go to the next step.
3	DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS OVERHEATING OR OTHER WARNING: Observe legal speed limits when driving the vehicle and perform the procedure in a location where safety can be assured. To prevent an accident, work with two people when the vehicle is being driven (one person drives vehicle, other person operates M-MDS). Access the PCM PID [ECT] using the M-MDS. Is the PID value less than 116°C {241°F} during driving?	Yes	Go to the next step.
3		No	The cause of this concern could be from the cooling system overheating. Perform the symptom troubleshooting [COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS OVERHEATING]. (See COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-OVERHEATING (VIN Y) .)
4	VERIFY SPARK PLUG CONDITION Remove all spark plugs. (Refer to ACTIVE AIR SHUTTER SYSTEM SPARK PLUG INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Inspect the spark plug. (Refer to SPARK PLUG INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
4		No	Go to the next step.
5	INSPECT INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM FOR AIR LEAKAGE Verify if there is air suction into the intake air system (such as between MAF sensor and intake valve, vacuum hose, evaporative hose, ventilation hose). (Refer to VACUUM HOSE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .) (Refer to EMISSION SYSTEM LOCATION INDEX (VIN Y) .) (Refer to INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .) Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
5		No	Go to the next step.
6	INSPECT MAP SENSOR Access the following PIDs using the M-MDS: PCM: MAP BARO Measure the intake manifold vacuum when idling (no load). (Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD VACUUM INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Does the difference between PIDs [BARO] and [MAP] nearly match the intake manifold vacuum value?	Yes	Go to the next step.
6		No	Replace the MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR NO. 2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
7	VERIFY MAF SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
7		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR NO. 1 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
8	VERIFY IAT SENSOR No. 2 FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
8		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR NO. 2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
9	VERIFY ECT SENSOR No. 1 AND No. 2 FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
9		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
10	VERIFY EGR VALVE FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to EGR VALVE INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
10		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to EGR VALVE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
11	VERIFY WATER-COOLED CHARGE AIR COOLER FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to WATER-COOLED CHARGE AIR COOLER COOLANT LEAKAGE INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
11		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to WATER-COOLED CHARGE AIR COOLER COOLANT REPLACEMENT (VIN Y) .)
12	VERIFY KS FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (Refer to KNOCK SENSOR (KS) INSPECTION (VIN Y) .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Remove the accumulated matter in the cylinder head using the following procedure: Carbon remover Perform the repair completion verification 1.
12		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1. (Refer to KNOCK SENSOR (KS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
Repair completion verification 1	VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure. Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?	Yes	Complete the symptom troubleshooting. (Explain contents of repair to customer)
Repair completion verification 1		No	Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error. (See MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN)] .) If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1. If the malfunction recurs, go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 2	VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY NOT PERFORMING PCM REPROGRAMMING Verify repair information and verify that there is a new calibration in the PCM. Is there a new calibration in the PCM?	Yes	Perform the PCM reprogramming and verify if the malfunction symptom was corrected. If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM. (Refer to PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
Repair completion verification 2		No	Replace the PCM. (Refer to PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION (VIN Y) .)
