Removal Note

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the control valve body. See CONTROL VALVE BODY REMOVAL / INSTALLATION , .
  2. Remove the shift cable.
    1. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual control lever.
    2. Remove the shift cable from the bracket.

  3. Remove the digital transmission range (TR) sensor. See DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION , .
  4. Remove the transmission modulator heat shield (5R44E/5R55E only).
    NOTE:
    • If equipped, the transmission servo heat shield needs to be undipped from the fluid pan rail and positioned out of the way for fluid pan removal.
  5. Loosen the nut and position the heat shield out of the way.

  6. Remove the overdrive/front band locknut and unscrew the overdrive/front band adjusting screw.
    • Discard the overdrive/front band locknut after removal.

  7. Remove the catalytic converter. See THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L , for 2.3L engine, see THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L , for 3.0L engine or see THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 4.0L , for 4.0L engine.
    CAUTION:
    • Servo cover is under spring pressure.
  8. Using the servo cover compressor SST  , remove the overdrive band servo cover retaining ring.
    1. Install the servo cover compressor SST  and compress the overdrive/front band servo cover.
    2. Remove the overdrive/front servo cover retaining ring.
      • Slowly remove tension on the J-hook nut and remove the servo cover compressor.

    CAUTION:
    • The servo removal tool SST should be used to prevent damage to the servo and bore.
  9. Use the servo removal tool SST  to remove the front band servo cover, servo piston and servo piston spring.
    1. Insert the servo removal tool SST  into the transmission case, locate on the servo rod, and remove the front band servo cover, servo piston and servo piston spring.
