Diagnostic Procedure

- Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Turn ignition on. AIR BAG warning light in instrument cluster should illuminate for 6 seconds and then turn off. If AIR BAG warning light does not function as described, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light functions as described, go to step 3.
- Check for SRS malfunctions. See SYMPTOM TROUBLE SHOOTING . Perform appropriate test as necessary. Once tests have been completed, check for correct operation. Go to step 1.
- Measure voltage at Gray/Black wire at Data Link Connector (DLC) connector. Voltage should be more than 2 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step 5. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Access SAS control module and disconnect module connectors. See Figure. Check between DLC connector terminal SCN and SAS control module connector, terminal No. 2K (Gray/Black wire) for short to ground or open circuit. See Figure & Figure . If Gray/Black wire is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness between SAS control module and DLC connector and go to step 6. If Gray/Black wire is okay, go to step 6.
- Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Access SAS control module and disconnect unit connector. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and DLC connector terminal SCN (Gray/Black wire). If voltage is about 12 volts, replace wiring harness between SAS control module and DLC connector and go to next step. If voltage is not about 12 volts, disconnect negative battery cable and go to next step.
- Reconnect all connectors. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light starts flashing (indicating present DTC exists), record code(s) and go to step 9. If AIR BAG warning light does not flash DTCs, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Using a jumper wire, short DLC terminal SCN (Gray/Black wire) to ground. Turn ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light starts flashing (indicating past DTC exists), record indicated past malfunction code(s) and go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not start flashing, system is okay at this time.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect jumper wire from ground. Identify retrieved past malfunction code. See AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) table. Check appropriate connectors in circuit applicable to code(s) retrieved for proper connections. Turn ignition on and wiggle related air bag wiring harness. If AIR BAG warning light flashes, record indicated present malfunction code(s) and go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not flash, turn ignition off and disconnect jumper wire. Refer to past malfunction code(s) recorded instep 7 and go to next step.
- Perform appropriate DTC tests starting with smallest code. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS . Check all components and wiring harness as described in testing, even if checks have already been performed. Once appropriate tests have been performed, clear past malfunction codes and go to step 6. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS .
