DTC 12: Right Seat Belt PRETENSIONER System

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Access and disconnect right seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect pretensioner connector. If there is cracking or chipping in pretensioner connector, replace wire harness. Go to step  4. If pretensioner connector is okay and this is a present DTC, go to next step. If pretensioner connector is okay and this is a past DTC, go to step  3.
  2. Connect leads of Fuel And Thermometer Checker (49 0839 285) to seat belt pretensioner harness connector, terminals. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition on. If DTC 12 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 12 is not indicated, replace seat belt pretensioner. Go to step  4.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check wiring harness between SAS control module connector, terminal 3I (Pink wire) and seat belt pretensioner connector, and SAS control module connector, terminal 3K (Blue/Yellow wire) and seat belt pretensioner connector for short to ground, power supply or an open circuit. See Figure. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 12 was retrieved as a present malfunction, replace SAS control module. Go to next step. If wiring harness is okay and DTC 12 was retrieved as a past malfunction, replace seat belt pretensioner. Go to next step. If wiring harness is not okay, replace air bag wiring harness and go to next step.
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
