DTC 91: Warning Light Circuit

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda Protege5 and 2003 Mazda Protege. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Connecting ground or jumper wire to improper DLC terminal may cause air bag or other electrical system malfunction or damage, and could cause air bags to deploy without warning.
  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . If DTC 91 was retrieved as a present malfunction, replace SAS control module and retest system. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If DTC 91 was retrieved as a past malfunction, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Check 10-amp METER fuse No. 10, located in joint fuse block behind left kick panel. If fuse is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If fuse is blown, replace fuse and go to step  7.
  3. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check AIR BAG warning light bulb. If bulb is okay, reinstall bulb and go to next step. If bulb is not okay, replace bulb and go to step  7.
  4. Measure continuity between instrument cluster connector terminals 1J and 1R. See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace speedometer and tachometer (if equipped), and go to step  7.
  5. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal 1J. If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, replace wiring harness between joint fuse block and instrument cluster, and go to step  7.
  6. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access and disconnect SAS control module connector. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check wiring harness between SAS control module connector, terminal 2W and instrument cluster connector, terminal 1R (Brown/Yellow wire), and DLC connector, terminal FAB (Brown/Yellow wire) for short to ground, power supply or an open circuit. See Figure, Figure & Figure . If wiring harness is not okay, replace wiring harness and go to next step. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect all connectors and install previously removed components. Reconnect negative battery cable. Clear past malfunction DTCs. See CLEARING PAST MALFUNCTION DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If AIR BAG warning light operates normally, trouble shooting is complete. If AIR BAG warning light does not operate normally, reconfirm malfunction symptoms.
