Rear Drive Shaft Assembly: Installation

HINT.

  1. INSTALL HOLE SNAP RING 
    1. Install a new hole snap ring.
  2. INSTALL REAR DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Coat the spline of the inboard joint shaft assembly with gear oil.
    2. Set the shaft snap ring with the opening side facing down
    3. Align the shaft splines and install the drive shaft assembly with a brass bar and a hammer.
      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to damage the drive shaft dust cover, boot or oil seal.
      • Move the drive shaft assembly while keeping it level.

      HINT:

      It is possible to determine if the inboard joint shaft is properly engaged (the shaft is in contact with the pinion shaft, and the snap ring is engaged in the pinion gear) based on the sound or feeling when the shaft is driven in.

    4. Install the rear drive shaft assembly to the rear axle carrier
    NOTE: Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot.
  3. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  4. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  5. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  6. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  7. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  8. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  9. INSTALL NO. 3 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  10. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE  (See REASSEMBLY )
  11. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  12. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  13. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  14. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET  (See REASSEMBLY )
  15. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING  (See REASSEMBLY )
  16. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING  (See REASSEMBLY )
  17. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION  (See REASSEMBLY )
  18. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR  (See INSTALLATION )
  19. INSTALL REAR DISC  (See INSTALLATION )
  20. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY  (See REASSEMBLY )
  21. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT 
    1. Clean the threaded parts on the drive shaft and axle hub nut using a non-residue solvent
      NOTE:
      • Be sure to perform this work for a new drive shaft.
      • Keep the threaded parts free of oil and foreign objects.
    2. Install a new rear axle shaft nut

      Torque: 290 N*m (2957 kgf*cm, 214 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Using a chisel and hammer, stake the rear axle shaft nut

  22. STABILIZE SUSPENSION  (See INSTALLATION )
  23. FULLY TIGHTEN TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  24. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  25. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 UPPER CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  26. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  27. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  28. INSTALL REAR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE  (See INSTALLATION )
  29. INSTALL NO. 2 DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT PROTECTOR  (See INSTALLATION )
  30. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf) 

  31. BED IN PARKING BRAKE SHOES TO DISCS  (See REASSEMBLY )
  32. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE AND PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  33. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT  (See REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT )
  34. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  35. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
