Rear Axle Carrier: Installation

  1. INSTALL REAR AXLE CARRIER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the rear axle carrier sub-assembly with the 2 bolts and nuts to the shock absorber.

      Torque: 180 N*m (1,840 kgf*cm, 133 ft.*lbf) 

      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to damage the outboard joint boot.
      • Be careful not to damage the speed sensor rotor.
      • Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor rotor.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and tighten the bolt.

  2. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 2 
    1. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 2 with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the rear side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

  3. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 1 
    1. Temporarily tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 1 with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the front side of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

  4. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR STRUT ROD ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily tighten the strut rod assembly rear with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the inside of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

    2. Temporarily tighten the strut rod assembly rear with the bolt and nut.

      HINT:

      Insert the bolt from the inside of the vehicle and lightly tighten the bolt.

  5. INSTALL SKID CONTROL SENSOR (for 2WD) (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  6. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the hub and bearing assembly with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 75 N*m (765 kgf*cm, 55 ft.*lbf)

  7. INSTALL REAR DISC (See  REASSEMBLY  ) 
  8. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts to the rear axle carrier.

      Torque: 78 N*m (795 kgf*cm, 58 ft.*lbf)

  9. CONNECT SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE (for 2WD) 
    1. Connect the connector to the skid control sensor.

  10. INSTALL REAR SPEED SENSOR (for 4WD) 
    1. Install the speed sensor with the bolt.

      Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) 

      NOTE:
      • Be careful not to damage the speed sensor.
      • Prevent foreign matter from adhering to the speed sensor.
      • Do not twist the sensor wire when installing the sensor.

  11. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT (for 4WD) 
    1. Using a socket wrench (30 mm), install a new rear axle shaft nut.

      Torque: 294 N*m (3,000 kgf*cm, 217 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      • Stake the nut after inspecting for looseness and runout in the following steps.
      • While applying the brakes, install the rear axle shaft nut.
  12. STABILIZE SUSPENSION (See  INSTALLATION  ) 
  13. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 2 
    1. Fully tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 2 with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 112 N*m (1,140 kgf*cm, 83 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      While holding the nut, turn the bolt.

  14. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY NO. 1 
    1. Fully tighten the rear suspension arm assembly No. 1 with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 112 N*m (1,140 kgf*cm, 83 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      While holding the nut, turn the bolt.

  15. FULLY TIGHTEN REAR STRUT ROD ASSEMBLY 
    1. Fully tighten the rear strut rod assembly (rear axle carrier side) with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 80 N*m (816 kgf*cm, 59 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      While holding the nut, turn the bolt.

    2. Fully tighten the rear strut rod assembly (vehicle side) with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 80 N*m (816 kgf*cm, 59 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      While holding the nut, turn the bolt.

  16. CONNECT PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY NO. 3 
    1. Install the parking brake cable assembly No. 3 with the nut.

      Torque: 6.0 N*m (61 kgf*cm, 53 in.*lbf)

  17. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts, and separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly.
      NOTE: Use a wire or an equivalent to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.

  18. REMOVE REAR DISC (See  DISASSEMBLY  ) 
  19. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
  20. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  ) 
  21. INSTALL REAR DISC (See  REASSEMBLY  ) 
  22. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the rear disc brake caliper assembly with the 2 bolts to the rear axle carrier.

      Torque: 78 N*m (795 kgf*cm, 58 ft.*lbf)

  23. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT NUT 
    1. Using a chisel and a hammer, stake the axle shaft nut.

  24. INSTALL REAR WHEEL 

    Torque: 103 N*m (1,050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf) 

  25. ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT (See  REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT  ) 
  26. CHECK SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL 

    (See TEST MODE PROCEDURE )
