Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 Toyota 4Runner. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When replacing the master cylinder solenoid, perform zero point calibration (See CALIBRATION  ).

HINT:

Start the inspection from step  1 when using the hand-held tester and start from step  3 when not using the hand-held tester.

  1. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (MOMENTARY INTERRUPTION OF FRONT SPEED SENSOR) (SEE  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS   ) 
    1. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and push the hand-held tester main switch ON.
    3. Select "DATA LIST" mode on the hand-held tester.

    4. Check for any momentary interruption in the wire harness and connector corresponding to a DTC.

      OK: There are no momentary interruptions. 

    HINT:

    Perform the above inspection before removing the sensor and connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT) 

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. READ VALUE OF HAND-HELD TESTER (FRONT SPEED SENSOR) 
    ITEMS NORMAL CONDITION TABLE

    1. Check that there is no difference between the speed value output from the speed sensor displayed on the hand-held tester and the speed value displayed on the speedometer when driving the vehicle.

      OK: The speed value output from the speed sensor displayed on the hand-held tester is the same as the actual vehicle speed. 

    NG: Go to step   4 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. PERFORM TEST MODE (SIGNAL CHECK) (See  TEST MODE PROCEDURE   ) 
    1. Check if test mode (signal check) DTCs are detected.

      Result: 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Test mode (signal check) DTC is output A
      Test mode (signal check) DTC is not output B

    B: Go to step   9 

    A: Go to next step 

  4. INSPECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR INSTALLATION 
    1. Check the speed sensor installation.

      OK: 

      • The installation bolt is tightened properly. 

        Torque: 8.3 N.m (85 kgf.cm, 73 in.lbf)

      • There is no clearance between the sensor and the front steering knuckle.

    NG: INSTALL FRONT SPEED SENSOR CORRECTLY OR REPLACE FRONT SPEED SENSOR (See  SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH  ) 

    NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (See TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR TIP 
    1. Remove the front speed sensor (See SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH ).
    2. Check the sensor tip.

      OK: No scratches or foreign matter on the sensor tip. 

    NG: CLEAN OR REPLACE FRONT SPEED SENSOR (See  SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH  ) 

    NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after cleaning/replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. INSPECT FRONT SPEED SENSOR AND SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE 
    1. Install the front speed sensor.
    2. Turn the ignition switch off.
    3. Disconnect the front speed sensor connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in TERMINALS RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION TABLE .

      Standard:

      A10-1 (FR-) - Body ground 10 k or higher

      LH:

      A9-2 (FL+) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      A9-1 (FL-) - Body ground 10 k or higher

      Skid Control Sensor Wire: 

    5. Disconnect the skid control sensor wire.
    6. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in TERMINALS RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION TABLE .

    NG: REPLACE FRONT SPEED SENSOR OR SKID CONTROL SENSOR WIRE 

    NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (see TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (BETWEEN SKID CONTROL ECU AND FRONT SPEED SENSOR) (See  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING  ) 
    1. Disconnect the skid control ECU connector.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in TERMINALS RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION TABLE .

      Standard: 

      RH:

      S28-3 (FR+) - A10-2 (FR+) Below 1
      S28-3 (FR+) - Body ground 10 k or higher
      S28-17 (FR-) - A10-1 (FR-) Below 1

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. INSPECT MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID 
    1. Reconnect the skid control ECU connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in Fig 5.

      Standard: 

      RH: 

      TERMINALS VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION TABLE

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A10-2 (FR+) - Body ground 7.5 to 12 V

      LH: 

      TERMINALS VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION TABLE

      Tester Connection Specified Condition
      A9-2 (FL+) - Body ground 7.5 to 12 V

    NG: REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (SEE  OVERHAUL  ) 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    2. Drive the vehicle at a speed of approximately 20 mph (32 km/h) or more for 60 seconds or more.
    3. Check if the same pending DTCs are detected (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).

    HINT:

    Reinstall the sensors, connectors, etc. and restore the previous vehicle conditions before rechecking for DTCs.

    Result:

    DTC is not output (When troubleshooting in accordance with the DTC TABLE.) B
    DTC is not output (When troubleshooting in accordance with the PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE.) C

    B: END 

    C: PROCEED TO NEXT CIRCUIT INSPECTION SHOWN IN PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE (SEE  PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE   ) 

    A: Go to next step 

  10. REPLACE FRONT SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Replace the front speed sensor (See SPEED SENSOR FRONT LH ).
      NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after replacement (See TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).
  11. RECONFIRM DTC 
    1. Clear the DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).
    2. Drive the vehicle at a speed of approximately 20 mph (32 km/h) or more for 60 seconds or more.
    3. Check if the same pending DTCs are detected (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR  ).

    HINT:

    Reinstall the sensors, connectors, etc. and restore the previous vehicle conditions before rechecking for DTCs.

    Result: 

    RESULT REFERENCE

    DTC is output A
    DTC is not output B

    B: END 

    A: Go to next step 

  12. INSPECT SPEED SENSOR ROTOR 
    1. Remove the front axle w/ ABS rotor bearing assy (See REPLACEMENT ).
    2. Check the sensor rotor.

      OK: No scratches, oil, or foreign matter on the rotors. 

    NG: CLEAN OR REPLACE FRONT AXLE W/ ABS ROTOR BEARING ASSY (SPEED SENSOR ROTOR) (See  REPLACEMENT  ) 

    NOTE: Check the speed sensor signal after cleaning/replacement (See TEST MODE PROCEDURE  ).

    OK: Go to next step 

    REPLACE MASTER CYLINDER SOLENOID (See  OVERHAUL  )
