Pad, Instrument Panel: Removal

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, Occupant Classification System (OCS), seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment.

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove both instrument panel speakers. Refer to SPEAKER, REMOVAL .
  3. Remove the a-pillar trim (3). Refer to PANEL, A-PILLAR TRIM, REMOVAL .

    Using a (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent, remove the end caps (2) from the instrument panel (1)

    Refer to CAP, INSTRUMENT PANEL END, REMOVAL .

  4. Using a trim stick or equivalent, release the push pin fasteners (1) and the retaining tabs (2) and remove closeout panel (3) located between the A-pillar trim and the front scuff plate.

  5. Using a trim stick or equivalent, disengage the retaining clips securing the front door sill scuff panel (1) to the door sill and lower B-pillar.
  6. Remove the front door sill scuff panel (1).

  7. Unclip the harness and connector (2) from the dash side (1) on both sides of the vehicle.
  8. Disconnect the a-pillar wiring connectors.
  9. Repeat on the opposite side of the vehicle.
  10. Remove defroster grille. Refer to GRILLE, DEFROSTER, REMOVAL .

  11. Remove push pin fasteners (2) and remove the lower dash silencer panels (1).
  12. Remove the floor console. Refer to CONSOLE, FLOOR, REMOVAL .
  13. Remove the steering column (1). Refer to COLUMN, REMOVAL .
  14. Remove the cluster (1). Refer to REMOVAL .
  15. Remove glove box assembly. Refer to GLOVE BOX, INSTRUMENT PANEL, REMOVAL .

  16. Located under the passenger side of dash, disconnect the body to dash wiring harnesses (1).
  17. Disconnect the coaxial connectors (2), if so equipped.

  18. Using a trim stick or equivalent, separate the four clips (1) and remove the HVAC control head (2).
  19. Disconnect the control head electrical connector.

  20. Remove the center bezel (2).
  21. Remove the radio module. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL .

  22. Remove the bolts and remove the radio support bracket.

  23. If equipped, remove the amplifier. Refer to AMPLIFIER, REMOVAL .
  24. Reach through and above the glove box opening (4) of the instrument panel to access and remove the two screws (5) that secure the Passenger AirBag (PAB) (2) lower mounting bracket to the instrument panel structural support (3).
  25. Still reaching through the glove box opening, disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the PAB pigtail wire harness connector (1).

  26. Using a trim stick or equivalent, remove the center speaker cover (1).
  27. Remove the screws (2).

  28. Remove the upper storage bin (1) from the instrument panel top cover (2).

  29. Separate the harness (1), if equipped.

  30. Remove the lower surround panel fasteners (1).

  32. Using a trim stick or equivalent, separate the retaining clips and remove the lower instrument panel surround panel (1).

  33. Remove the fasteners (1).

  34. Remove the trim fasteners (3) and remove the trim panel (2).
  35. Remove the fasteners (1).

  36. Remove the fasteners (1) in the cluster opening and the fasteners (2) from the center opening.

  37. From under the instrument panel remove the fasteners (1) securing the duct work to the HVAC housing.

  38. Remove the instrument panel top pad assembly (1) from the support structure (2).
