Test TC-2A - No Crank Reference Signal At Pcm (DTC 11)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Wrangler, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 1995 Jeep Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Perform TEST TC-1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  at the end of this article. Perform TEST VER-2A  after each repair.
  1. Using scan tool, erase trouble codes. Attempt to start engine. If engine will not start, crank engine for at least 10 seconds.
  2. Using scan tool, read trouble codes. If scan tool does not display NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM, condition required to set trouble code message is not present at this time. Go to next step. If scan tool displays NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM, go to step 6).
  3. NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM fault sets if Powertrain Control Module (PCM) does not see a Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal with Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor signal present. Possible causes are: failed CKP sensor, open or shorted CKP sensor signal circuit (Gray/Black wire on XJ and YJ bodies or Red/Light Green wire on ZJ body), open or shorted CKP sensor 8-volt supply circuit (Orange wire on XJ and YJ bodies or White/Black wire on ZJ body), open CKP sensor ground circuit (Black/Light Blue wire), improperly adjusted CKP sensor or failed Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Go to next step.
  4. Inspect all related wiring and connectors and repair as necessary. If no problems were found with wiring and connectors, go to next step.
  5. Start engine. Wiggle wiring harness from CKP sensor to Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If engine misfires or stalls, repair wiring harness as necessary. If engine does not misfire or stall, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION  in this article.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor 3-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage at CKP sensor connector terminal No. 3 (Orange wire on XJ and YJ bodies or White/Black wire on ZJ body). If voltage is more than 7 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 7 volts, go to TEST TC-2B  .
  7. Connect a jumper wire between CKP sensor 3-pin harness side connector terminals No. 1 (Gray/Black wire on XJ and YJ bodies or Red/Green wire on ZJ body) and No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire). Turn ignition off and then on. Using scan tool, read trouble code messages. Make and break connection at CKP sensor connector several times while observing scan tool. If scan tool does not display NO CAM SYNC SIGNAL AT PCM, go to next step. If scan tool displays NO CAM SYNC SIGNAL AT PCM, replace CKP sensor.
  8. Turn ignition off. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of 8-volt supply circuit CKP sensor 3-pin connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Blue wire circuit.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 60-pin connector and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. If PCM 60-pin connector is okay, go to next step. Repair any PCM 60-pin connector terminal that is damaged, pushed out or incorrectly wired.
  10. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance CKP signal circuit between PCM 60-pin connector terminal No. 24 and CKP sensor harness connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Black wire on XJ and YJ bodies or Red/Light Green wire on ZJ body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in CKP signal circuit.
  11. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of CKP signal circuit on PCM connector terminal No. 24 (Gray/Black wire on XJ and YJ bodies or Red/Light Green wire on ZJ body). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CKP sensor signal circuit between PCM 60-pin connector and CKP sensor 3-pin connector.
