Test NS-9B - Repairing A No Crank Condition

NOTE:
Perform TEST NS-9A
before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAM in STARTERS under ELECTRICAL section. Perform TEST VER-1A
after each repair.
- If vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, go to TEST NS-9A . Locate starter relay in Power Distribution Center (PDC). Disconnect starter relay and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of starter relay ground circuit at starter relay connector terminal "C" (Black/Tan wire on XJ, Brown/Yellow wire on YJ body, or Black/White wire on ZJ body). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in starter relay ground circuit.
- Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on fused battery voltage circuit at relay connector terminal "B" (Black/Red wire on XJ body, Red wire on YJ body, or Red/Violet wire on ZJ body). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in fused battery voltage circuit.
- Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on ignition switch output circuit at starter relay connector terminal "A" (Yellow wire on XJ and YJ bodies or Yellow/Black wire on ZJ body). If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in ignition switch output circuit.WARNING: Before proceeding with next step, ensure transmission is in neutral, parking brake is set and drive wheels are blocked. Keep hands, loose clothing or jewelry away from moving engine part. Engine may be cranked in next step.
- Briefly connect a jumper wire between starter relay connector terminal "B" (Black/Red wire on XJ body, Red wire on YJ body, or Red/Violet wire on ZJ body) and terminal "D" (Brown wire) and go to TEST NS-9C .
