Test NS-9C - Repairing A No Crank Condition
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Jeep Wrangler, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and 1995 Jeep Cherokee. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Perform TEST NS-9A or TEST NS-9B before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
at beginning of article. For wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAM in STARTERS under ELECTRICAL section. Perform TEST VER-1A
after each repair.
- After connecting jumper wire between starter relay connector terminal "B" and terminal "D", if starter did not crank engine, go to next step. If starter did not crank engine, but starter solenoid clicked, go to next step. If starter did crank engine, replace starter relay.
- Disconnect jumper wire. Disconnect starter relay output wire at starter solenoid and ensure connector is clean and not damaged. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of starter relay output circuit between starter relay connector terminal "D" (Brown wire) and starter solenoid connector (Brown wire on Wrangler, Light Green/Black wire all others). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in starter relay output circuit between starter relay and starter solenoid.
- Reinstall starter relay in Power Distribution Center (PDC). Remove Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay from PDC. Place transmission in neutral (M/T) or park (A/T). Set parking brake. Ensure battery is fully charged. Set voltmeter to .10 volt scale and go to next step.
- Connect positive voltmeter lead to battery post and negative voltmeter lead to battery cable clamp. Turn ignition to start position and measure voltage. Repeat procedure for other battery post. If voltage is zero volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than zero volts, repair poor contact between battery post and battery cable clamp.
- Connect voltmeter positive lead to battery positive post and negative lead to starter solenoid battery stud. Turn ignition to start position and measure voltage. If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than 0.2 volt, repair poor battery positive cable connection at solenoid. Repeat procedure. If voltage is more than 0.2 volt, replace battery positive cable.
- Connect voltmeter positive lead to battery negative post and negative lead to a good clean ground on engine. Turn ignition to start position and measure voltage. If voltage is less than 0.2 volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than 0.2 volt, repair poor battery negative cable connection at ground. Repeat procedure. If voltage is more than 0.2 volt, replace battery negative cable.
- If starter solenoid clicked when jumper wire was connected in step 1), repair mechanical condition preventing starter from cranking engine. If starter solenoid did not click when jumper wire was previously connected, replace starter solenoid.
